Briton Fears Rise of Isolationism
OKLAHOMA CITY TIMES Wed., August 21. 1968
LONDON <AP) — A
British commentator hits
cautioned his countrymen
against rooting too strong-
ly for America's doves.
Behind the anti-war fer-
vor in certain American
circles could lie an un-
tapped reservoir of isola-
tionism, wrote Desmond
Donnelly in the News of
the World.
“Many British politi-
cians applaud the so-called
American doves who want
to get out of Vietnam, and
attack the hawks who
want a tough line,” he
said. "They believe these
doves are like themselves,
but they tire nothing of the
kind. The can be isolation-
ists. And American isola-
tionism will mean a chilly
period for Britain. It can
mean new political chal-
lenges, new economic
hardships and eventually
new throats to our national
security."
Closely linked to the
Vietnam war, American
presidential politics contin-
ues to attract attention
abroad.
Japan's Asahi Shimbun
editorialized: “This year's
presidential election is an
election fight amid contra-
diction and confrontation
. . . The atmosphere of
seeking change and a
break from tradition in
both domestic and foreign
policies has become unu-
s u a 11 y strong. This
reached a peak during the
time of the primary elec-
tions . . . Frankly speak-
ing, the impression is that
the hopes for change and a
break from tradition will
decrease."
