Haskell County's Flrsl Annual Llje Dobyns-Lantz Hardware Coin-

success in every way, with the ex-j Company. In these exhibits were

The sniallness of the crowd the over by the ladies of the Christian
first two days was amply made up
for on Saturday, when people
flockel to the fair grounds from all
over ti e county, the crowd on that
occasion being estimated at from
2,000 to 3,000 people.
A feature of Saturday's program
■was the parade of school children,
the largest ever seen in this part of
the state and which was a showy
affair in every way, reflecting much
credit .on those responsible for ar-
ranging it.
Music for the three days was fur
nished by the Cowlington Cornet
band of fourteen pieces and it was
of a high order of excellence, both
as to concert and marching work
and was greatly enjoyed by every-
one.
To the committee on arrange-
ments, consisting of Eugene Mayer,
W. S. Stocker and Judge A. L.
Beckett, is due much credit for the
work performed by them in making
the affair so creditable in every way.
The entire fair went off without a
hitch in the entire program, and
with the exception of the regretta-
ble accident of Saturday, afternoon,
nothing happened to mar the occas-
ion.
There was plenty going on in the
amusement line all the time, there
being many 6ide shows of all kinds
and descriptions, from the merry-go-
round to the African Dip, and all
were liberally patronized, especially
on the closing day.
The Judging of the various en-
tries was done on Saturday, the
judges for the various events be-
ing Prof. G. H. Hines of Westville,
poultry; J. C. Elliott, or Stillwater,
horses and cattle, mules, jacks, etc.;

church, who did a thriving business
and cleared a considerable sum of
money as a result of their efforts.
Mrs. W. S. Stocker, Mrs. James
Sylender and Mrs. J. A. Eddy were
in charge of this feature.
George L. Smith, who showed the
Independent Harvester line, showed
-a manure spreader that won first
premium at the recent Oklahoma
State Fair. He was assisted by A.
W. Hardy of Oklahoma City, state
agent for that company.
The school parade Saturday after-
noon formed In the business center
of the city, and headed by the Cow-
lington band, marched down Third
street and east on Choctaw avenue
to the fair grounds. The schools
of Stigler, Kinta, Chant, McCurtain,
and from other sections of the
county were in the parade and it
was by far the best thing of the kind
ever seen in Stigler, or in this part
of the state, for that matter.
At the head of the parade, cos-
tumed to resemble Uncle Sam and
mounted on a spirited charger, was
James Jones of Kinta, and by his
side, Miss Bennie McGraw of Kin-
ta, attired to resemble Miss Okla-
homa. She made a pleasing appear-
ance, and being a graceful rider,
received much attention. In the
parade, astride a Shetland pony, was
Pope Walker, the 8-year-old son of j allowed >3 00; court fund
Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Walker, who wore, 1601 M h Spessard.
a costume of the Continental period.
He rode the pony like a veteran and
was quite a center of attraction.
Miss Elizabeth Delaney of Stigler
was among those who rode at the
head of the parade and in her at-
tractive costume, easily shared the
'honors with Miss McCraw and Mr.
Jones of Kinta.

the riding and driving exhibitions.
In the tent given over to the la-
dies, was shown a variety of fancy
work, preserves, samples of cqok-
ing, all of w-hich attracted much
favorable notice.
The agricultural departnient was
housed in a large tent and in it
were displayed a great variety of
the products of the county, all nice-
ly arranged and well displayed.
Many fine specimens of cotton were
shown. There were some fine
samples of Kaffir corn, which at-
tracted much attention, which was
grown by J. M. Scantlen In Stevens
county.
In this tent were also placed the
exhibits of the State Board of Agri-
culture and thoie of the Connors
School of Agriculture of Warner, the
latter in charge of J. S. Murray, sup-
erintendent of the school. In this
exhibit was shown a massive silver
loving cup which was won by the
State of Oklahoma at an internal
al exposition held in Canada a few
months ago, for the best bushel of
wheat grown anywhere In the world.
This cup was won by the state in
competition with many foreign
countries and attracted u great deal
of Interest.
Another feature of the Connors
exhibit was a handsome silver cup
won by J. T. Keck of Enid at the
International Dry Farming Congress
charge was R. I. Cross, who de>
serves much credit for the splendid
appearance made by his school.
The pupils of the Eureka school,
Ben Baker, teacher, also rode in a
wagon which was neatly decorated
for the occasion. The pupils of the
other schools marched, all being
accompanied by their teachers.
Upon arriving at the fair grounds,
the speech-making part of the pro-
gram began. Prof. M. L. Cotton be-
ing in charge and introducing the
several speakers. The first was R
H. Wilson of Oklahoma City, state
<uperintendent of public Instruction,
who was followed by Hon. Charles
Evans, president of the Central
State Normal at Edmond. James
F. Lawrence, Esq., of this city, was
to have spoke, but an important en-
gagement called him aw^ay from the
city.
All of the speakers confined their
remarks to educational topics, and
gave pleaty of good advice to the
rising generation. They were list
ened to with close attention and
their eloquent periods were fre-
quently interrupted by applause.
Prof. G. H. Hines and J. C. Elli-
ott are both members of the State
Board of Agriculture, Bnd were loud
in their praises of Haskell County's
first attempt In the county fair line.

In this tent were also shown the
exhibits from many of the county
schools, including Kinta, Chant,
McCurtain and Stigler. The exhib-
its were of a varied nature, show-
ing the work of the pupils of the
different grades. They attracted a
great deal of attention and mch fav-
orable comment was bestowed oti
them. Superintendent M. L. Cottor,
assisted by many of . the county
teachers, deserve much credit for
the excellence of the exhibit.
Other exhibits that were the cen-
ter of much Interest were those of
sweep-
stakes blue ribbon for the largest
and most complet? exhibit ou the
qroumlu. The Jers -v bull ofi'ered by
him for the best dairy cow shown
was awarded to J. A. Reynolds.
J. A. Reynolds, who was also a
winner of many premiums on his
exhibits of live stock and poultry,
had on exhibition his famous 3-year-
old roadster, "Missouri Mont," who
won first money at the Arkansas-
Oklahoma fair in Fort Smith a few
weeks ago. This same horse, the
object of much favorable comment,
won the first prize in the S-year-
old roadster class.
