per cent of all property recovered.
After looking the caae iip carefally
he concluded that tH claim war a
joat one, and ao accepted the offer to
tak« it on a contingent fee.
Kvery decision in the Colorado
court waa agsinst him, but be did
not falter. The caae waa appealed
to the federal courts, and finally,
after >e*r* of Work the case was re
rtried in the court of appeals at 8t.
Louis and Ht. l'faul, Mr. Green *
olieuts were given Judgment for
one-third interest In the Kmma mine,
valued at seventeen million dollars;
and one third of all dividends that
had been paid, amounting to ten
million six hundred thousand dollars
The caae was carried into the supreme
court, where after a long wait and
numerous legal quibbles, the decla
sion of the court of appeals was af-
firmed.
The owner* of the mine did not give
up even then, but sought to bring
new action*. It was at this stage
that a compromise wa* suggested,
tnd shortly afterward a basis of set-
tlement waa made that gave Mr.
Green and his client each three mil-
lion dollars.
This is the moat nolablo mining
case ever tried In the American
courts, and the attorney's fee I* the
largest over received. Mr. Green
bad put Into the case all of his own
private fortune, and had the case
gone against him ho would have hoen
