The department very wisely con-
cluded to locate four land otliccs in
tho Cherokee strip. Swincburne is
sent here to sp'ec', suitable locations
Ills ouly business here was to report
oa tiio topography of the country,
put the whcedl ng of Guthrie swelled
his head, and he lias concluded to
reverse Secretary Smith, and loeate
but one offlee.
Tiie Guthrie people arc pretending
to stand in with Kingfisher on the
str'p land olllces, but the truth is
that a plan is already matured to ac-
cept a compromise in the location of
the land olllces which wiH place an
ofllco at Pond Creek, and still leave
the cast end of the strip to bo added
to the Guthrie olllce. The Kingfisher
people will in a verj; few days learn
of Guthrie's treachery.
The republican administration lo-
cated two land olllces in original Ok-
lahoma, and finding the business too
gi°at for them established a third
one. There were but 1,800,000 acres
of Oklahoma. The ship contains H,
(100,000 acres, but the representative
of the democratic administration pro-
poses to place but one land olllce.
Those Guthrie real estate speculators
have a convincing way that officials
can not coabat.
The latest reports confirm the ru
mor started some time ago, to the
eirect that Secretary Smith had de-
cided upon locating liooths along the
borders of the Cherokee country
where all who intend to make the
ra o must first register. It is going
to entail a useless waste of govern-
ment money and will do no good
Tiie proposal shows how ignorant the
Washington officials are, concerning
the nature of a land opening.
The greatest recommendation to
tho stranger coming into Oklahoma
is the enthusiasm of the people here.
When the people living here, and
who have been here since tho country
opened have every confidence in the
country they have tried, it drives
away the doubt that may exist in the
stiangers mind. A stranger remark-
ed the other day that the most re-
markable thing to him was the faith
of the people themselves in the coun-
try-
A TOUGH PLACE.
Watch your [jacket books, and es-
pecial')' look out for foot pads and
burglars. There arc a lot of light
lingered gentry in the town and you'll
be apt to lose your roll if you give
them half a chance.—Ok. Times-
Journal.
Here we have it from the fountain
head. We always thought it was a
damn tough place to live in, but we
didn't realty believe that one had to
give his whole time to looking after
his wallet.—Gil'brie News.
A pick pocket usually knows too
much aliout the financial condition
of the country to stop at such a place
as Guthrie.
