V
On Wednesday night of last week, a
horse, belonging to R. J. Johnson, was
stolen from his place eighteen rhiles
southeast cf here. The animal taken
Was a brown mare five years old. She
with four others Was loose in the road.
Search was begun at once. The
frist trace found of the thief Was near
Red Oak in Cleveland county where
he has been living Here the serchers
found that he was a criminal of a deep-
er dye. Sometime before this he had
married a widow named Greene, who
had some property. She had one
child, a daughter nearly grown. This
man, whose narhe we failed to learn,
after the marriage wanted hiS wife’s
property turned over to him. The
daughter objected to this. To silence
her objections he attempted to poison
her by administering strychnine placed
in her coffee. When the men, Who
were seen by the News reporter, left
the neighborhood the young lady was
still living but in a very critical condi-
tion, and her recovery is doubtful.
When the would be murderer saw that
his purpose Was about to fail and sus-
picion hegan to point io him he left.
Before leaving, however, he attempted
to assault a Mrs. Alwood. fn this he
was unsuccessful.
From the scene of these crimes the
man was traced to where the horse
was taken, and all the facts point to it
being the same man. But from where
he got the horse all trace of him was
lost. The sheriff of that county and a
large force of citizens are scouring the
country in search of him. He has as-
sumed the name of Grout: and when
he left had a shotgun and A revolver in
his possession, but at orte p'ace he
stopped he traded the former for a coat.
