NEW YORK COTTON
NEW YORK, April 12-uf- Cot-
ton futures were steady today in
slow trading, dominated by switch-
ing operations from nearby May to
later months.
Late afternoon prices were un-
changed to 25 cents a bale higher
than the previous close May 33 48,
July 33.69 and October 33.87.
NEW YORK STOCKS
NEW YORK, April 12—1*— The
stock market advanced today with
the steels and chemicals out in the
front in the late afternoon.
Drug companies producing the
Salk polio vaccine were in demand
most of the day, but there were
some signs of profit-taking late in
the sessions.
Gains went to around 3 points in
several instances while losses of
a point or more were found infre-
quently.
Volume amounted to an estimat-
ed 2 12 million shares. That com-
pares with 2,680,000 shares traded
yesterday when the market was up
a little.

How Can I?
Q. How can I make a good fish
filling for sandwiches?
A. Make a smooth paste of cream
cheese and cold salmon. Then add
stuffed olives, which have been cut
in halves. This makes a delicious
sandwich filling.
Q. How can I make a cheap wa-
terproof dressing for shoes?
A. By melting tallow and mixing
with neatsfoot oil in the propor-
tion of 7 parts of the oil to 3 parts
of tallow. In cold weather, use less
tallow, about 1 part to 3 parts of
oil.
Q. How can I remove stains from
the stove?
A. The brown stains on light-
colored gas ranges can be easily
removed by using a cloth dipped
in turpentine.
Q. How can I prevent rust in the
oven?
A. The oven door of the gas range
should be left open after using.
This will let out the warm air, and

no moisture will collect to form
rust.
Q. How can I remove starch from
the iron?
A. If the iron has become coated
with a film of starch, run it over
a sheet of fine sandpaper and the
iron will be perfectly smooth
again.
Q. How can I straighten the
tangles of the floor mop?
A. Take a clothespin and comb
the mop just as one would with an
ordinary comb.
