“Galileo, Searcher of the
Heavens,” written by Emile Namer,
is the next of the new books at
the Carnegie Library up for re-
view It U given below;
’Picture Edison in the Congo,
trying to persuade the pymies that
the incandescent lamp is a simple
fact, and you have the position
' of Galileo. Only, hts predicament
was barbed with this irony: the
men who would not accept his
lucid demonstrations were looked
up to as the intellectual giants of
the era.
"Sages of a Golden Age of the

main simpletons where science wasi
concerned, accepting us Holy Writ!
the untested two-thousaiul-year-old
speculations of Aristotle.
All his life the Italian genius
had to cut his wat through dead-
wood. had to overcome the ridicule
or Jealousy of his university col-
leagues. had to submit to the cen-
sure und active opposition of the
church.
"When from the Leaning Tower
of Pisa, he gave occular proof that
bodies of different weights fall
with the same velocities, he was
mocked as a trickster. The In-
finity of new stars revealed by his
famous telescope was dismissed as
an optical or mental Illusion.
"His insistence that the sun was
thi center of the universe was
condemned as hereticul. and pre-
cipitated his tragic trial by the
Inquisition, the question of his
recantation. His long .scientific
career was a succession ol drama-
tic conflicts, to whicli the author’s
thorough knowledge and sympathy
have rendered full Justice"
. ’’This is a modern biography of
one of the great moderns of nil
time, a liberal like Kepler and
Newton, one of those whom Shaw
has recently called Makers of Uni-
verses. A colossus, he led the self-
satisfied mlnlglni about him in
spite of their resistance, and con-
tinued to seek out the tilings that
'could not be.’
"And he found them—even after
he went blind In the ucceptid
