Banka In Broad Daylight-—
Bay Captor Claims Ona Thau-
oand Dollars Roawrd.
Stroud. Okla.,—The two banka In
this place were held up and robbed at
10 o’clock Saturday morning by seven
men. Henry Starr, bandit for whom
t reward of H.000 Is offered by tbo
itate, was shot by a boy and captured.
Six of the robbers escaped, riding
out of town In a hail of bullet a. One
of them known aa Louia Estes was
vhot and fell from his horse after rid-
ing a mile and was captured. Five
robbers escaped.
When he was captured Henry Starr
had 11,000 in his pockets. When Estea
fell from his horse he had f(& in silver
xnd It was scattered on the ground.
The seven men rode Into Stroud
(bout 10 o'clock and tied their horses
at the stockyards. They walked to
the banks an entered without excit-
ing any suspicion. They were not
masked and no arms were In sight. A
moment after they entered the banka
it became known that a holdup had
taken place.
A Boy Shooks Starr.
When the men came out of the banks
ihe alarm was given and men were
running into the streets armed with
ahotguns, Winchesters and revolvers.
They began to shoot at the robbers
xnd their fire was returned. It was
X typical battle with bank robbers,
auch as have taken place in many
towns in the southwest.
One of the first to come Into the-
atreet was Paul Curry, 15-year-old son
if a grocer, who came out with a Win-
chester. The man nearest to him was
Henry Starr, who was trying to mount
his horse. The boy ran toward him
xnd fired and Starr dropped his re-
volver to the ground. The bullet fired
by young Curry struck Starr in tha-
(eg and he fell to the ground.
After a fight near town the rob-
bers rode out in sight of the posse, tak-
ing a southeasterly direction and figbt-
ing as they rode. They were closely
pursued by armed men and shots were
fired at them whenever they were In
light.
An hour after leaving tha pastur»
the bandits were forced to abandon
their horses and take to the brush.
Their horses were captured and are
now In possession of the posse. A
third robber was shot in the fight after
leaving the pasture and was unable to
travel afoot. The horses were aban-
doned by the bandits fire miles south-
east of Stroud.
Paul Curry, who shot Starr, has
sent a telegram to Oovernor Williams
saying he claimed the reward of $1,000
offered by the atate for the capturo
of Starr, dead or alive.
Last of Desperadoes.
A recent proclamation of Oovenor
Williams offered a reward of $1,000
for Starr's capture, dead or alive. At
present he Is a fugitive from justice*
charged vrlth violation of parole.
Starr Is the last of the plcturesqua
desperadoes who lent romance to out-
lawry in the Indian Territory. He Is
a decendant of Tom Starr, an early
day Indian desperado.
In the early '90’s Henry Starr, then
In his teens, began to sell whisky to*
the Indians. In 1901 he was charged
with complicity in the robbery of an
express office at Nowata, which re-
sulted In the killing of Floyd Wilson,
a deputy United States marshal.
In rapid succession bandits led by
Starr robbed a bank at Bentonville.
Ark., a Katy train at Pryor, stores at
Nowata and Choteau, a bank at Aid-
rich, Mo., and a bank at Caney, Kan.
After the Carney robbery Starr was
betrayed and captured in Colorado
Springs, Col. He was taken to Arkan-
sas and convicted of the Bentonvilla
robbery. He was released from tho
state prison in 1906 after serving uear-
ly thirteen years.
Starr was convicted of a bank rob-
bery at Amity, Col., but later was re-
le.ased on parole. It is for violation of
this parole that he la wanted in Color-
ado.
One of the stories which reveals the*
dashing bravado of the man is that of
his romance and marriage. Among
the passengers of a train robbed near
Pryor Creek. Ok., in 1902 was a young
woman who, crazed with fear, ran
away in the darkness. Later the rob-
bers found her and Starr lifted her to
hls horse and carried her to a railway
train that she might continue her jour-
ney. She was a young woman of Jop-
lin, Mo., and Starr later married her.
She has been a school teacher much
of the lime since her wedding.
Triad a Clever Ruse
A letter waa received from Governor
Williams the morning of the robbery,
purporting to have come from Henry
Starr at Reno, Nev. It has been pro-
nounced by police and state officials
as a clever ruse of Starr s to turn sus-
picion away from him or his associates
In the robbery which they had eviden-
tly then planned nt Stroud. Compari-
