AN ENDLESS WAR.
Sotlalia, M Oct. 10.—Harry Ernst,
uf the Nineteenth U. S. infantry, who
| lies been doing service in Cebu and
lfobol islands, in the Pnilippines the
last year, has written to ins father,
Chas. F. Ernst of this city, that pel -
ma, out peace there is far more dis-
tant than dispatches to tlie metropul
it no papers indie ite. Around Manila,
quiet prevails, Ernst admits, but not
j so elsewhere, he says. In concluding
a lengthy le.ter, descriptive of con-
ditions there, Ernst sa>»:
“I do not believe the insurgents
will ever give up the tight. We can
buru them out and kill them one hy
one and then quiet litem tor a time,
hut the spirit of com tativeness horn
in llteir savage breasts still exists.
They will never consent to remain
quiet permanently and it is my candid
belief that there ure years of lighting
ahead for the American troops, in
fact until the last Filipino has been
kilted.’’

TWENTY $25,000 JOBS.
Denver, <> t. 10— Lyman J. Gage,
secretary of the treasurer, was the
principal speaker at a meeting of Den-
banking employes at the Blown
I’aluce Hotel to institute a brunch of
the Aiuericau inslitutiouof hank clerks.
Mr. Gage declared today that the de-
mand for good bank ollicials is greater
than the supply. Said lie: “If 1
knew that you were capable 1 could
take twenty young men out of your
midst and place you in positions in
various parts of the country which
would pay you $25 000 a year.
Fifty years from now the country
will have a population of 190 million
people, and the banking business will
increase proportionately ”

CHADWICK TESTIFIES.
Washington. Oct. 11 —Capt. F, E.
Chadwick, who commanded the New
York aud was Admiral Sampson's chief
of atnIf, was called as a witness in the
Jchiey court this afternoon. He tes-
tified concerning the code of signals
arranged by Capt. McCalla with the
Cuban insurgents at Cienfuegos. He said
he had not iufornied Commodore Schley
because Capt. McCalla was to return
immediately to Cienfuegos where
Schley was stationed.
(It seems that every subordinate and
middy in the lleet knew all about the
code of signals, yet Commodore Schley
was kept in ignorance of them. Why?
Evident.y to hamper him. The in-
vestigation now going on shows the
corps of naval officers to he rotten
to the core through petty jealousy.
