VIRTUES OF THE ONION. ^

Us devotees regard It as a panacea for
LY-oocl many ills and ae a prev- n*.i«
„f many of the diboroera to which flesh
is heir.
The onion is really a eery ordinary
Vegetable, but there is one point which
distlniruishes it. and that is the some-
what high percentage of sulphur it
contains. Possibly the virtues ascribed
to it depend on the presence ui this
element.
Like the lemon, the onion mar lay
claim to antiscorbutic properties—
that is. to qualities which render it ii

constituents include a proportion off
potash salts, and probably its anti-
scorbutic qualities depend upon these
lutter compounds.
The onion is doubtless a healthful
enough vegetable, but its supposed
sleep-producing powers nr* said to be
mythical. The virtue of ouion juice
us a remedy for t he stings and wasp at-
tacks is conceded. In the cottager's
repertoire of “first-aid” expedients,
onion juice, rubbed on the sting, rep-
resents the ammonia of a more ad-
vanced stage of domestif Luedicnj*.
