ROME, Sept. in. What will be the
I longest tunnel in the world is now
[under construction in the heart of the
!Appenines, between Florence aud Bo
logon, as a portion of the new rail
road connecting these two cities.
It will he fifteen miles long. The
new line will be electrically operated
The tftnnel will occupy one fifth of
the entire roadbed and the traveler
will lie underground for more than
half an hour, but the absence of
smoke i; expected to obviate the usual
discomforts associated with such gal-
leries.
Two and u half miles longer than
| tlte Simplon tunnel, which hitherto
hehl the world's record, the present
bore drives directly through the spinal
column of the peninsula in order to
bring (lie two chief cities of central
Italy an hour and a half closer than
they now are. With the operation of
the new line, the stretch between Bo
logtia and Florence, which now re-
quires three and a half hours to cover,
will lie reduced to a running time of
two hours.
Disproportionate through the gaiu
may seem to the outlay, the commer-
cial activity of the country lias put a
yearly increasing pressure on the main |
artery of communication between the
