September 16 Is an Important date
with the Jews. This will be their
new year, and In cities where there
Is a large Jewish population It Is
celebrated on an extensive plan.
The Jewish calendar contains two
New Year days. Rosh Hashanah is
held by tradition to be tho day on
which God created the earth. It falls
either In September or October of
the Christian year, being reckoned
by the new moon of the seventh
month, Tihsrl. Ablb Is the first
month of tbe religious year and cor-
responds with March or April, the
year dating from the moon after the
vernal equinox.
The celebration of Rosh Hashanah
is established by the laws of Moses.
In Leviticus are found these words,
"Speak unto the children of Israel,
saylng the seventh month tho first
day of the month shall ye have a
Sabbath, a momorla of blowing of
trumpets and hold convocation. Ye
shall do no service work therein, but
ye shall offer an offering made by
fire to the Lord."
Business Is generally suspended In
Hebrew commercial circles during
the celebration of the New Year.
Among the orthodox Jews the cele-
bration lasts two days, while the
Reformed Jews celebrate It for one
day only. The Reformed and Or-
thodox congregations differ In cus-
toms, but not beliefs. The Orthodox
congregations cling to customs said
to have been established by rabbi?
of generations long Ago. while the
Reformed congregations stand strict-
ly on the law as It is given In the
five books of Moses.
It is now a penalty for anyone to j that he shall sell the property the

Iron Mountain Railroad Resists As-
sessment on the Roadbed.
Muskogee, Okla., Sept. 13.—Judge
Campbell of the United States Court
has granted a temporary injunction
to the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &
Southern railway, restraining the
sheriffs of Muskogee, Nowata, Rogers
and Sequoyah Counties from execut-
ing tax warrants and collecting taxes
from the road. The road alleges that
It was not resisting the payment of
Its own taxes, but that the taxes 01
the Kansas & Arkansas Valley had
been assessed against It.
The railroad claims the Arkansas
Valley owns the roadbed, while the
Iron Mountain owns the rolling stock
and, In fact, merely leased the road-
bed; that sheriffs were threatening
to tie op trains on the company'ij
road, which was the principal reafcoi)
for a temporary injunction. Hearing
will be held at McAlester September
20.
