"Cast her down Through ifl timed
Union."
The leaf had been so mutilated and
and torn that neither the date of
copy-right nor damn of the author
could be made out. Trao6fd on the
lower inargiu ot the leaf was a par-
tial name, "Agn—" written in neat
clerical text, the remaining letters
having been torn away by the spoils-
man's band. '
On the reverse side the story or
legaud was initiated, a law lines of
which were sufficiently preserved to
be here given:
"Vain, worthless manl In the brew
distilled
Of dreamy sentiment; bauds un-
skilled
The wherewithal to endow a wife;
Yet, pandering to a selfish life
You would through ill-timed union
cast her down,
Her sacrifice such base ambition
crown.
No, no! Be yours, not hers the
sacrifice
Nor cast her down through pas-
sion's avarice!
You so far beneath the worth of
her;
No! This should not be; {he
thought forbear.,"
Here, as 011 the reverse side, ven-
dal fingers had intervened and tfie
legend cut short.
With neither thought nor rnotjye,
leisurely I wrapped the picture up
agaiu using the same floss and the
Same paper; and tossed it tq the side
of the walk, por deemed jt would
prove auy measure of loss. And why
not? It was only an old Btyle tin-type
of some one I had never seen, and
whose name 1 knew not, nor habita-
tion.
I ventured on, and in due time wii^
at my podt listenening to that call sy
familiar tp welders of the pen,
'•JI-o-r-e copy!" Every now and then
my mind would wander back to where
I had cast that picture down tg be
trampled aud bruised by ruthless
feet. Then a little face would present
itself tp me with such saddened
grace and pleading so wistfully
gentle, that my conscience began up-
braiding me. Two soulful eyes gem-
med with divine luster would gaze
up so foudly into mine unf.il feelings
experienced of actual guilt on chas-
tisements fouudatioj propped would
unbidden possess aud bear me down,
for having so cruelly cast the little
picture at my feet to be trampled in
the clay by the heedless passerby.
These presentations grew more fre-
quent and more prouounced as the
day waned, their influence over me
prevailed to such a degree that 1 was
powerless to driye them back. They
continually upbraided me with press-
ing accusactioqs of some dire wrong
which called for reparation.
I sought through the hurry of work
to banish the presentmunts and to
brqsh aside the annoying reveries, in
vaiu. They came with coustaut in-
trusion, leading ccnfusiqn to disor-
dered thoughts. At last the pen
caught the embarasing pulse, and I
wi.s compelled to lay it aside-
Toward evening a drenching rain
prevailed aud the great Ixm^ of storm
asxeiled the calm.
How uuwelcome this rain; as it
drives pearled waters against the win-
dows. Each drop conceals a glisten-
ing tear from soulful eyes revealed
through the vieliug brume. Iu the
dull music of the storpi beatjug iu
such discordant measure, comes sighs
in «nj whispers melting my soul with
their plaintiff impress. I looked out
into the black storm where playful
clouds drift by iu doleful trist, and a
pale and bloodless little face (s there,
tinually darker about me. I was con-
scious of my predicament of minds,
aud desired, of course, to avoid be-
trayment toothers, yet not sufficient-
ly to outweigh that silent force which
urged resolve. Whatsoever way I
looked, two love-lit eyes would meet
mine, aud I could hear a voice from
motionless lips pleading so sweetly
sad aud low for deliverance from the
mar^h of hurrying feet that threaten-
ed with ruthiul haste to crush tbeui
out; deliveranco from tho wild mad-
den waters that threHtoued to shroud
them iu the murky Hood and rashly
bear them down to draftty depths to
be shut out from sight and forever
closed-
Mantling the truth in a clever ruse,
I excused myselt on pretext of au ap-
pointment to early supper; I seized
my hat aud umbrella and darted out,
not to au early supper, however. Had
any one noticed me in my anxious
course, I shouli surely have present-
ed ludicrous spectacle, hovering be-
neath that umbrella at full mastj for
the lain had ceased and the skies
were perfectly clear. A number of
blocks had been spanned before re-
covering my absent miud- By this
time the street lei.diug to the river
had been reached, and the rain had
been sufficient to drench all the walks
and overflow the gutters. 1 lowered
the umbrella into a walking stick, aud
as the drifts floated by on the cur-
rents, 1 would rake out aud examine
every little scrap which I thought
might prove the object of my search.
Every inch of way was thus gont, ov-
er until the particular spot was reach-
pd where J had cast the picture down.
By this time the waters had assuag-
ed, leaving the walk and grounds am-
ply exposed, and 1 felt sure of find-
ing the coveted parcel; unless, per-
cuance, it had beeu swept away by
the floods. Yes, I felt confident of
rescuing it,aud speculations besought
my miud as what I should do with
the thing when once I should succeed
iu recovering it; but the predomina-
ting impulse was first to rescue the
perplexing treasure, aud thus relieve
the chaffiugs of conscience for haying
so wantonly cast it down. How an-
xiously I traced aud retraced, every
foot of ground, with disappointed
hope. Iuch by inch I searched, ex-
amined and researched. In vain!
The search proved fruitless. No
picture|
Nightfall ot last overtook me and I
was compelled to abandon the search.
Instead of an early Bupper that
night, I ate none at all; it was late
aud 1 was not hungry.
I strove by every means to smother !
back the silent rebuke from those
motionless lips; and the shadowy out-
line of that little upturned face 1
sought to dissipate, in VBin! Those
streaming eyes would gleam through
the darkness aud meet mine iu tender
askance, that I could neither blind
tniue against them nor steal agaiust
their accusing darts. Feelings bor-
dering on object horror at length be-
seiged the citadal of reason and forc-
ed capitulation. I sought the in-
viting pillow, but neither sleep nor
rest ivas vouched throughout tho eL-
tire night; restless I tossed inextri-
cably bound on the promethean rack.
Strive lie best I could to woo con-
scious to ease the same unspeakable
feeling prevailed. I felt as though
some Kreat and irretrievable loss had
been sustained which common pru-
dence might have averted. Remorse,
blackplumed, rode the ambulance of
night, aud mingled in tho wretched
revelry my unclosed eyes were pow-
erless to shun. I was the mourner;
at an unknown bier; and yet my
heart seemed buried in tho cask.
