"The"Los Angeles, Cal., Record
of recent date states that the city is
flooded with people looking for work
and unable to find it, many of them
on the verge of starvation. It also
states that when a person is so for
tunate as to secure work the pay is
s0 small that they can „ scarcely live
on it. The Record claims that this
condition is caused by misleading
circulars sent out by railroads, en icr-
ing that city and flowery-pictured
literature circulated by real estat
dealers.
Death of Lit le N:al Trivet.
The following account of death of
the little son of Wiley W. Trivett, a
former resident of this place, now
residing in Webster county, Mo ,
was sent tc this office.
One of the saddest accidents that
ever happened in this country was
the death of little Neal Trivett last
Saturday when his father accidently
shot him with a rifle, causing his
death a few minutes later. W. W.
• Trivett was out with his two child-
: ren, Neal, who was only 7, and Ber-
• nia. 12 years old. Mr. 1 rivet; was
shooting at a squirreljin a tree when
a shell became lodged in the 22
calibre rifl': that he was using, and
when he removed the stuck shell with
his knife, another cartrage entered
the chamber and was discharged
The children were sla.iding 40 fee
away when little Neal cried cut,
"Oh, Papa, y<u have shot me in the
leg." The wound did not then seem
serious, but Mr Trivett carried him
the the house where he died a few
minutes later.
Coroner. Dr John R. Bruce, was
called and after making an examina-
tion of the body he decided that death
was caused by the severing of the
big femoral artery by the bullet.
The coroner decided that'an inquest
1 was unnecessary as it was plainly a
case of accident • • ' ' '

REVEALS POSITION IN WATER
New Life Preserver Shows a Light
to Guide Possible Rescuers
to the Drowning.
Word comes from Germany of the
invention of a life preserver with
novel features.
This device weighs about 5V2
pounds and consists of two swim-
ming cushions bound together by
straps. The cushions lie upon the
breast and back. The preserver is
provided with a small lamp fed by
an electric battery, which can be ad-
justed about one's head by means
of a band on the forehead, so that;
by night the position of one in the
water can be determined at a con-
siderable distance.
This lamp is 6aid to burn from;
three to four hours. With a reflector
added light may be thrown for sev-
eral hundred yards.
The preserver may, it is further
claimed, be adjusted in five seconds,
the lamp affording illumination as
soon as the buckle is fastened.—Har-
per's Weekly.

In Budapest you see walking
about the city, waiting at the rail-
way stations and driving in car-
riages, many Hungarian women
wearing ribbons of various colors.
Some have two or three ribbons,
others have four, five or six. One
woman had nine ribbons. I hat
meant that she spoke or at least un-
derstood nine languages, each color
representing one language.
Bright red represents English, a
heliotrope or lavender is German, a
