DELAWARE MOUNT
On the old California Road. The Cali-
fornia Road, in 1849-1853, ascended
the escarpment, about 3/4 mile east,
known to travelers as "Delaware
Mount." This "Mount" extends from
several miles south of here, northeast
to the Canadian River. At top of this
plateau, travelers exclaimed on the fine
view of headwaters of Muddy and
Clear Boggy creeks.

wares to settle in this area in the 1840sLocation of marker: At Latta School, at the southwest corner
of the intersection of State Highway 12 and the section line
road, about three miles southwest of Ada, Pontotoc County.
Delaware Mount has been referred to as the high dividing ridge
between the headwaters of the Muddy Boggy and Clear Boggy
creeks and the valleys of Sandy Creek and the Canadian River.
Though in the Choctaw Nation, Black Beaver's band of Delaware
were permitted to settle in this area by the Choctaw National
Council in 1844. Later the natural phenomena became a landmark
for the Forty-niners traveling over the California Road to the gold
fields.
