COSTLY JOKE ON DETECTIVE
Philadelphian Took Seaman on Leave
for Deserter From United
States Navy.
Philadelphia, Pa.—As a result of a
boast that he was a deserter from the
navy, Owen Martin, a seaman on the
battleship Idaho, at League Island, was
arrested In Pittsburg, and brought
back to his vessel two days before his
leave of absence had expired, while
the detective who paid the expenses
of bringing him back to his ship in
the hope of obtaining the customary
reward of $60, returned to Smoky City
without the money, a sadder but wiser
man. Martin had been visiting his
home in Sellersville, 111., and was on
Ills way back to Philadelphia when the
incident occurred. In n spirit of fun
he declared that he had deserted the
Idaho several weeks previous.
Without waiting to write or tele-
graph to the Idaho for particulars, the
detective, whose name is Miller, took
Martin into custody and boarded the
first train for this city. Martin de-
nied that he whs a deserter, stating
that he had made the assertion in fun,
hut fuller was obdurate and Insisted
on accompanying him back to hlB
ship.
Arriving on board the Idaho at
League island the de ertiv» found that
Martin had been on a leave of ab-
sence and still had two days to his
credit before reporting for duty. Miller
could only retire ns gracefully as pns-
tible, while the crew of thp Idaho
gleefully bombarded him with pota-
toes.

tained by the state food investigating

a day, showed f"om his books that
after allowing himself a salary of $25
a week hlB net profits for the year
1911 were $16. Another grocer main-
tained that the higher cost of living
was largely due to the housewife's
careless methods of buying.
“With prompt attention to the de-
tails of purchasing, the problem of
keeping grocery bills within reason-
able limits Is an easy one," ho said.
"I knew of one woman, a customer of
mine, whose husband's Rnlary Is $15
a week, and who managed to run his
hqusehold of seven without any ap-
parent difficulty. Her family always
has enough to eat, although some-
times. when prices are high, she can-
not afford to bnv certain kinds of
food. She markets like the old-time
housekeeper, buying her food In bulk,
and always paying cash.”
