$100 FOR AN EGG
)
Of an East Indian Game Fowl Import
ed Into England.
Not often does the price of a single
*gg climb to $100,but that is what was
offered for each of the eggs of a cer
tain Indian game hen, which was
brought to England some time ago
says Country Life in America.
For centuries the Indian game, 01
Azeel fowls, have been the very ape>
of the game breed, for the pureness oi
blood and pedigree have been mos!
carefully preserved for so long that
the date of the origin of the race has
been lost in the past.
It is almost impossible to procurt
specimens of the purest blood, for the]
are treasured by the Indian sportsmei
at the highest value, and the bes
fowls are not allowed to go out o
their native country.
As game fowl, they are great fight
ers. Those who have seen them it
India—for the finest birds never read
our colder climates—tell of their prow
ess and ungovernable tenactiy in bat
tie. With them it is always victor]
or death.
In America, however, the gam(
fowls are seldom raised for fightinf
purposes, but are for show and as pet?
and hobbies for poultry fanciers.

Stringent Laws Prevented Mixing of
Scotch and English.
In the time of .lames II. of Scotland
the relations between the Scotch and
English were bad indeed. The king
objected to any business dealings be-
tween the Scotch and their southern
neighbors. To his subjects he thought
nothing could result therefrom but
evil. To preserve them, therefore, ]
from any approach to amity and inter- j
course with the hated southron, he |
actually decreed “outlawry” against
those who should desire, even in that
time of peace, to smooth down the dif-
ferences which divided the two peo-
ples. Agsinst Englishmen visiting
Scotland without leave the law was
especially severe, nor was any Scots-
man to be allowed to become security
or guaranty for an Englishman under
any circumstances whatever, unless
he wished to be accused of high trea-
son. Even legitimate trade was for-
bidden. No Scotsman was to supply
the English garrisons in Berwyek or
Roxburgh with "ony victual, fewal or
uther supportation” under the pain of
treason, while no intermarriage was
to be allowed between “the Scotti3
and English, that men’s affection be
na’ led away fro their air kinrik.”

This arrangement appears to be as
effective as it is simple, and possesses
features which will doubtless appeal
to the fair sex. The affair is amplj
explained by the accompanying pic
ture. It is small and unobtrusive, anc
when not in use hangs easily at the
side entirely out of the way. It wil
doubtless be quite popular with the
ladies.
An Old Saw Gainsaid.
Once upon a time two men were
riding In an automobile, bound for a
certain town, which neither of them
Lad ever visited.
“Have we not made a mistake in
the road?” asked one of the other.
"1 am »ure we are right,” was the
answer.
Soon they came to a hill which the
automobile refused to climb.
"What is the matter?” asked the
first questioner.
“Our power ihas given out,” an
swered the other, “and we must stay
here until assistance arrives.”

Value of a Hearty Laugh.
Health, an English publication, says: |
“It is good to laugh. There is prob-
ably not the remotest corner or little
Inlet of the minute blood vessels of
the body that'does not feel some wave-
let from the great convulsion produced
by hearty laughter shaking the cen-
tral man. Tho blood moves more rap-
idly—probably its chemical, electric or
vital condition is distinctly modified,
it conveys a different impression to ali
ihe organs of the body as it visits
them on that particular mystic jour-
ney when the man is laughing from
what it does at other times. The
time may come when physicians shall j
prescribe to a torpid patient so many
peals of laughter to be undergone at
such and such a time.”
Sought Death but Found Life.
A soldier who served under Gen.
Wolfe in the campaign resulting in the
fall of Quebec was dying of an abscess
in one of his lungs. “Well,” said he,
'as 1 am to die, I will die in battle,”
and he insisted on joining the firing
line. Very s<x>n he got a bullet through
'he lungs. The bullet pierced the ah
;cess at the psychological moment,
*pd drained it. The surgeons were
ible easily to cure the bullet wound,
tud the noldier lived for many a year

Clay Models in Favor.
In natural history museums clay
models of animals over which the
skins are stretched and made to ap-
pear entirely lifelike are coming into
use. This radical departure from tax-
idermy threatens to render that art
extinct, as the carefully modeled fig
•are made by a sculptor and placed in
a lifelike pose is deemed far more
desirable than a mere stuffed animal
as a natural history exhibit.

HEALTH
'Not to satiate one’s self with food is the science of health. Choose such food as agrees with the
stomach, taking only such quantity as it could easily digest. Never lear that your life wiil be shortened
