THC EDWARD* CASE.
PAUL McCLASKEY SIMON.
Paul MeClaskey Simon, son of An-
drew and Klla MeClaskey Simon, was
born at Phillippi, Weat Virginia, Jan.
2,'>tb, 1877, and died Jan 29th, 15*10,
being Ihirtyjliree years and four days
old
One of the moat remarkable cases
In the history of the county has been
the Edwards caw, where W. H. Ed-
wards has been on trial for the killing
•f bis sister August II, last.
The sute contended that It was a
case of cold-blooded murder, while the
defendant fought on the plea of Insan-
ity. The case was tried out, and the
Jury, arter a short deliberation, re-
turned a verdict of guilty, and assessed
the punishment at XV years in the
state prison.
The defense renewed their insanity
plea, and suco-eded in getting the
court to grant them a hearing on the
question of the sanity of the defend
ant Edwards. A jury was secured and
the evidence hashed over again, with
the opinion of several of the doctors
of the town, and two front the Supply
asylum. One of the doctors, Newell,
of Supply, qualified as an expert, the
others giving their opinion simply as
doctors. Newell said Edwards was a
victim of abortive dementia pesos,
which reduced to terms that anyone
can understand, means, that dements
once had a hold on his mind and had
aborted, I. e. left it, otherwise he
would have been dead long ago. The
preponderance of the evidence w as that
be comprehended what was going on
around him. The Jury was out 18
•■ours, and failed to agree, 8 being for
sanity and 4 for insanity. Judge
ixMiibourrow under the cimimsianoes
there geing some doubt as to his san-
ity, and not being able to conduct
another trial at this term of court, or-
dered the sheriff to take charge of him

This decision was on a friendly suit
for thepurpose of settling this much
noted question No funds for expense

not always live up to the requirements
of a consistent Christian life, and de-
sired to have It so stated that there
might not be any false lmpressons
left in the minds of those who knew as
to his conception of a true Christian
life, he continued to trust In hi*
blessed Savior and in the closing hours
expressed a readiness and a willing-
ness to go and rest his case with his
dear Heavenly Father, who doeth all
things well, so that his dear compan-
ion and friends, who are mourning the
loss of a dear one, do not "Sorrow aa
those who have no hope." This should
and no doubt does, comfort their
hearts. Oh, the blessed hope we have
in Christ is an anchor to the soul at
all times and especially Is this felt
aiost in times of trouble. The deceased
was engaged in the newspaper business
in Oklahoma and also in Kansas until
Jan. 1909, when through overwork and
exposure his health broke down and
he was forced to quit the newspaper
business. In Jan. 1909 he moved to
Woodward county, Oklahoma, where
he lived on a farm until his death.
He leaves a father, four sisters and
four brothers, besides his faithful and
loving wife and many friends who
mourn their loss. He was a loving and
devoted husband as will be seen from
the following little poem, which he
cherished very much and often had
sung to him by his dear companion.
A little way to walk with you my own.
Only a little way, then one of us must
weep and walk alone;
Until, until God's day.
A little way It Is so sweet to live,
Together that I know Life would not
have one withered rose to give.
If one of us should go;
And if these lips should ever learn to
smile,
With your heart far from mine,
'Twould be for Joy, for Joy, that In a
little while.
They would be kissed, be kissed by
thine.

llad the last Jury declared Edwards
insane, be would have beeu committed
to an asylum until declared sate- by
the authorities In charge, and then
would have gone to the penitentiary.
This is the way the cuse stands now,
except that the court may order an-
other trial as to his insanity at any-
time. in either case Edwards will be
in confinement the rest of his life.
This is the status as we are able to
get It briefly.
