A TEST
-
ji
Orlglnitl.i
"Marriage Is not n lottery. If n man
will take the pains to apply a few tests
to the girl ho expects to marry he can
very easily determine If rl e Is the oue
of a thousand ho wishes for a wife."
"Are you going to test me?"
"I may."
"How?"
He smiled. "It would be very stupid
of me to put you on your guard. Fore-
warned forearmed you know."
"You might at least tell me for what
faults yqu propose to test me." she
pouted.
"Ob there are innumerable faults in
women to make a man's life misera-
ble." "Such as"
'Well there's curiosity for In-
stance." "What else?"
"Jealousy. To tell tho truth I think
that on these two 'hang the Jaw and the
prophets. "
"Upon my word you quote Scripture
liko the devil."
lio started as if .struck. Could the
Iromuculatij woman be had chosen to be
Ids wife u'so such language? "You sur-
prise me" ho said coldly.
"Why. don't you know the devil
quotes Scripture admirably?"
"Ob!" bo. muttered with evident re-
lief. no kissed her and they parted. He
fully intended when ho spoke to apply
the tests for tho faults he had men-
tioned but meu aro not adepts in such
matters and they haven't tho tlmo to
devote to them. Ilesldes ho was pretty
well satisfied that tho girl ho bad cho-
sen was superior to most weaknesses
peculiar to women. The next time he
saw her the subject had slipped his
mind.
On her wrist was n gold bracelet a
snako making three colls about tho well
shaped member. Its eyes were emer-
alds. A tongue at tho tip of which was
a ruby protruded from Its open mouth.
It was certainly not a pleasant looking
ornament to bo worn on the arm of a
fair girl. It caught his eye in a mo-
ment giving him n slight shudder and
a vague premonition camo to him that
the serpent had come between them.
"What a singular bracelet!" he 're-
marked. "I don't remember seeing it
on yoot .ttiat before."
"Tha-f)r bttxuse i usually put It o I

"inars singular. And wliy uo you
'depart trom your rule today?"
"Becauso this Is tho anniversary of
tho day It was given me. On this day
onco a year I wear It tho whole twenty-
four hours."
"Tbat'B singular" ho said again pull-
ing his mustache wondcrlngly.
The girl ho had chosen for her Im-
maculate traits turned tho subject
-"Aro you going to tho Crabtree ball?"
she asked.
"Perhaps that Is if you go" ho re-
plied absently "But this bracelet
about which there Is bo much mystery-
docs It pertain to anything in your past
life I would wish to know?'
"No" sbo replied after some mo-
ments of thought "I should not con-
sider It anything that you have a right
to know."
nis reply camo after a period of
thought equal to her own: "I did not
pNk of my rights

"At nuy rntc .uny wish you may
Imvo In tho matter cannot be Kratlflcd."
Tblp time he was much longer lu
framing his reply and It camo In a
changed tone. "Do you think it pru-
dent for A man to marry n woman
who must keep a lifelong eccrct from
her husband?"
"If he has not confidence In her he
would ho Imprudent to marry her."
lie arose shook down his trousers
buttoned up his coat took out his glovcn
nnd put them ou with unnecessary de-
liberation. All tills was to give her
time. But the bluff was without effect.
Having proceeded thus far It was Im-
possible for him to recede.
"No man In bis senses" ho said
"would tie hlicso'j: up for life with rt
woman who has n secret of her past
life that she daro not impart to her hus-
band." "You mean that this cms our 'en-
piBcmcnt?" She wns ery cool about It. Indeed
her indlffcrcnco troubled him. lie

"Will you assure me lhat tho brace-
let has nothing to do with a previous
love?"
"No; It Is connected with the deepest
lovo of my life."
Tho color faded slowly from his face.
To glvo his hands employment and for
the purpose of concealing his feelings
he took out his handkerchief. His band
trembled.
"Is ho dead?" ho asked grasping at
a straw.
"No thank heaven he lives."
There was an nwful silence at tho
end of which ho moaucd:
''Will you grant me one last favor?"
"What Is it?"
"A kiss."
"If It will be of any comfort to you."
Ho advanced nnd when he reached
her sho sprang up and into his arms.
"What docs IV all mean?" ho asked.'
nstonlshcd.
"It means that a woman may apply
a test as well as a man. But if the
man doesn't stand the test she needn't
turn him nway for a little thing like
that. You have failed on both curiosity
and Jealousy."
"Who gave you the bracelet?"
"My father."
"And the rest of the story?"
"Oh. I made up all that"
"You little liar!" And ho folded her
