AN AGED LABORER SLAIN BY HIS
CO-WORKER.
John Hennesy a Section Hand at
Calvin I. T. Shot as He Sat Upon
a Log Sunday. Co-Laborer
Arrested on Suspicion.
The Nows of South McAlMtor give
the foll(jwlnK ilstall or a foul murder
noor there ns follows: i
As John Hennosy nn ngod laborer
on tho Chpctaw gectlon at Calvin was
sitting on n log aooui 6 yarns norm
of tho section house Sunday aftornoon
peacefully smoking his plpo he was
shot In tho hoatl by some miscreant
bent on robbing tho lonely old man of
his hoarded savings. Tho body was
not found until Monday morning and
the plpo was clutched In the old man's
hand. - Tho bullet had entered the
head just above the left oar and had
passod on through following a hori-
zontal course Tho discovery of tho
murder was made by Clark I'rlman
and another section man who woro on
tholr way to work. Thoy found that
tho old man's loathor belt had boon
unbuckled and his trousors opened In
front. Tho robhor had then seized
and cut off tho trousors pocket taking
away tho pocket and contents.
Tho old man woro threo pairs of
trousors two coats and two shirts.
Tho robber and murdoror had evident-
ly not tarried long onough to discover
this fact for In ono pocket of tho sec-
ond pair of trousors was found a snuff
box In which thero was crumpled a
roll of $200 In greenbacks. In another
pocket was another snuff box with
tho cover completely rusted over. It
looked llko a tiling of absolutely no
value. But when tho rusted lid wi
pried off and an Inner sack had been
emptied it was found to contain a. $20
gold piece and Ave odd looking bunch
es of beeswax "or putty. Each was
about tho slzo of an avorago man's
thumb and there .wore marks of clobo
ly drawn threads about them. One of
thoso was cut open by Doputy Mar
shal T. II. Whalcy and It was found
to contain two $1 bills sovoral years
.old and badly crumpled In fact so
mutilated that thoy would ho worth'
loss unless rcdeomed by tho United
Stntos treasury. It Is suspected with
reason thnt the other wads of wax
also contain money.

25 years old who formorly worked on
the section with Honnesy but who
was recently discharged because n se-
rious charge against his honosty had
been made was arrested by Mr. Whit-
ley nbout four hours after the discov
ery of tho murder. There were sever-
al things that pointed to his guilt. Ono
was tho fact that he had at 4:15 Sun-
day nfternoon returned to Mr. Woods
the Calvin merchant a ride that he
had borrowed about a week before.
The rifle fired a 32 cnllhro ball. It Itore
traces of having been recently fired.
The bullot hole In Itennesy's bond was
made by a ball of that calibre. A po-
cullar track was found near the dead
man. Ono heel was wide and the
other narrow and slightly Inclined nt
one side. It wns found that Barrott's
hoots lltted tho tracks oxactly. Evi
dently one of tho hoels of the hoot
had beon broken oft and tho ahoomalt
er who repaired It failed to match the
good heel.
It was also dluoovorod that Barrett
had beon very nervous slnco tho com
mission of tho crlmo had failed to
spond any time tnlklng with the boys
ns had been his want and" ho had
talkod ito a man of buying somo cattle
a mattor which occasioned surprise.
Crockett I.oo went out to Calvin
Mondny and wont over tho circum-
stances Incriminating Barrett and ho
and Whaloy brought tho suspect to
town horo Judgo Wright setting his
preliminary for this ovenlng.
Nothing Is known of Hennosy prior
to his coming to Calvin to work on
tho section. Whon asked his nge ho
would always say with a smllo that ho
was about 45 but his appcaranco Indi
cated that he was over GO. Ho began
work at Calvin last July. He said
that ho was a Swcdo but ho never
m ado any allusion to his past life. Ho
was miserly In his habits spending no
raoro money than was absolutely nec
essary. Ills associates as a rule never
suspected ithat ho had any great
amount of money about him. It was
his custom to go off by himself on
Sunday aftornoon and do his washing.
His absence did not attract any atton
Hon until Jio failed to show up for
worn- .uumuty morning.
