There is a u tice in this paper calling
upon the people of the town to use moder
a i ion in the matter of Lawn sprinkling that
should be heeded by all If several hun-
dred v ;ie waste water every afternoon
during these dry days the supply is going
to run then.
Thrte is a tern pes tio ? the boy or girl
about tfc.i time f year u hang on to a
good' job a:wi decide t stay out of school
this fail Of course they irtei.d to make
it up later. IVtter turn down the job and
enter school fr 'u can never make up
the lost time.
There is mure bitterness to the inch in
the editorial columns of the New State
Tribune than all other papers in the state
of Oklahoma combined. The governor takes
a great deal of time to argue with his
subordinates on matters in which he is
unquestionably right. Too much explain-
ing governor.
The Daily Chieftain is fully aware of the
fart that it addresses more Vinita people
six days in the week than She combined
pulpits of the town reach on Sunday.
While it doubtlessmay not present its
message to ably or 'so piously as the
preachers yet its desire is to.'have the
fullest possible confidence of its clientele.
Our earnest desire is to publish a clean
wholesome newsy sheet. The especial
ambition is the endorsement of the dis-
criminating women of the city on whom
we all depend for a standard of morals
and intelligence. If the Chieftain can
enter all the homes of Vinita the rest is
easy.
Before the close of one week from the
date of the first copy of the rejuvinated
Daily Chieftain the subscription list has
reached almost as large a circulation as
it had in its palmiest days. Watt till we
put on the Associated Press service and
The Chieftain will be read by more people
than any other newspaer in the northern
half of Oklahoma. The town is lots bet-
ter than it was some two years ago and
the rural routes are immense when it
conies to getting circulation. The Okla-
homa farmer wants to get the news at
least once a day and the Daily Chieftain
is able to reach them. The Chieftain
takes off its hat to the people of Vinita
and adjacent country as the most intelli-
gent people in the world.

A Different Bird. .
A Fhlladelphia tcaool teacher w
having a class is read' ig. and tie
subject was how an eagle had carried
a small baby out of Its cradle and
taken It away to lta nest on the moun-
tains. As the Btory seemed to impress the
children sh9tried to explain to them
that It waa only a story -that eagles
did not carry off little children.
Just then a little hand was raised
and a small boy remarked "Please
teacher the stork does that"
Prudance.
"So you have determined to clvlliie
our country" said th swarthy na-
tive. "We have" answered the resolute
white man. "Now tell me what fea-
ure of civilization interests you
most?"
"Well if you are absolutely de-
termined to civilize us I'd like to take
out some life Insurance."
Out of the Mouths of Babe.
Little Arthur stood peering dawn
Into the countenance of his baby sis-
ter whom the nurse was staging to
sleep.
"Say nurse" he finally whispered
"it's nearly unconscious. Isn't It?"
The nurse nodded la the affirmative
and sang on.
"Then doa't slog any more t yeall
kill it."
Mountains of Iron Ore.
The world contains at least four
mountains composed of almost solid
Iron ore. One is in Mexico one is the
United States another in India and a
fourth in Africa just below the Sou-
dan and there have been reports of
such a mountain existing in Siberia.
Soiled Paper Walls.
The soiling of walls caused by per-
sons leaning their hea.ls against thm
wall may be almost entirely removed
by laying a sheet of blotting paper on
tup spot and ironing over it with a hot
iron.

SUN'S RAYS Aau E THE CLOUDS.
Ballocnists Compelled to Shelter
Faces from the Fierce Heat.
At the height of two miles the sun
shines with a fierce intensity unknown
below where the dust and the denser
air scatter the rays which thus dif-
fused lose their intensity while il-
luminating every nook and corner of
our houses. At heights exceeding five
miles this diffused light is mostly
gone and the sun shines a glowing
ball sharply outlined in a sky of
which the blue is so dark as to ap-
proach blackness. At the outer limits
of the atmosphere the sun would ap-
pear a brilliant star of massive size
among other stars; and if one stepped
from its burning rays into shadow he
would enter Egyptian darkness. At
the height of a mile and a half we
found It necessary to shelter our
faces to prevent sunburn' although the
air around us was but little warmer
than that of the previous night being
about 43 degrees. As the afternoon
wore on and the balloon began to
cool and sink we were obliged to
throw out much sand casting It away
a scoopful at a time and just after
sunset it was even necessary to
empty two or three bags at once. Atlantic.
The Origin of Portusal.
About the year 1094 the name of
Portugal appears In the annals. Al-
fonso VII. of Castile in that year
signed over . to Count Henry of Bur-
gundy who had left his natives land
to help fight the threatening Moor the
county of Portugal as a fief. The name
Portugal comes directly from the
Latin signifying the Port of Cale
Cale being the old name for the town
of Oporto. The brief of Alfonso marki
the beginning of the separate existence
of Portugal. Though for many years
it was no more than a feudal depend-
ence of Castile nevertheless this child
was the father of the later independent
kingdom. In the year 1139 the lords
of Portugal took the title of king and
refused allegianca to any posr Mos-
lem or Christian. Rosary Magazine.

The most conspicuous trait which
has been revealed In the character of
the oyster is its abhorrence of race
suicide. An extremely fat and vigor-
ous oyster has been known to pro-
duce as many as 60000000 eggs while
13.000000 is a fair average. Suppose
thfre were but a single pair of oysters
at the beginning how many would
there he ia the fifth generation if
every egg developed? If you can get
the correct answer it will be just -ex-ar'Iy

An Apple Cure.
A curious investigation that is being1
made in England just now Is to dis-
cover how far apples are of use la
overcoming a taste for liquor.
The question is asked of medical
men In all parts of the country. The
large majority declared that they
never had known a case of a person
ar customed to the free use of apples
who was a drunkard; and inversely
those who were fond of alcohol rarely
liked apples.
