DEMOCRATS ORGANIZE
In New Country to Prevent a Repub-
lican Gobble.
Lawtou Ok.. Aug. 22. The
democrats of Lwton have per-
fected an organization for the pro-
tection ot their rights in the tirst
municipal electijn. Judge . O.
Nolan formerly of St. Louie ia
president; J. VV. Howard former-
ly of Kohoka Clay county Mo.
vice president and A. G. Camp-
bell formerly of El Rsno eecre-
tary and treasurer. The orgaoiza-
lion la known as the Lawton Dem-
ocratic club.
Judge Nolan has appointed a
committee of attorneys to ascer-
tain what effect the Oklahoma
statute which restricts the voting
franchise to men who hav resided
in the territory eix months will
have on settlers in the new coun-
try. The republicans have de-
clared that they will insist upon u
strict construction of the law.
This would stut out a lot of
.Texas Arkansas and Misnouri
democrats and it might enable
the republicans to carry th city.
The democratic lawyers believe
that the courts will bold that the
Oklahoma election statute can not
be made applicable to elections in
the new country. Their opinion
is that settlers have the name
rights as did the original fillers
in Oklahoma. If the democrats
are not disfranchised they will
control the firt city government
for they are in the majority.
Dr. A. B. Conley formerly of
Decatur Tex. is a candidate for
the democratic nomination for
mayor. Judge Nolan also has a
b'oni for mayor.
The Republican hav held sev-
eral caucuses lately and decided
to ask the governor to call a special
election for the last of September.
They have a number of candidates
for mayor and their convention ;
for the nomination of a ticket will j
be an exciting one. The Flynn j
crowd will attempt to control. !
The anti-Flynn men will act when
the other crowd decides upon a'
candidate for mayor. j
No local issues have yet arieen ;
ou which a campaign cm Id be I
made ao it is likely that the people
will vote their political sentiments
and that the party lines will be
closely drawn.
