WEEKLY EDITION

VmiTA.I.T. APR. 9 1903.
The agony it over.
The colored troops fought nobly
on both sides.
Now la the time to parohtae
Int nnon which to build s house
In Vicits.
The Chieftain hi some
thoroughbred poultry for sle at
great bargain.
Last week Muskogee built a
tG5000 opera house on paper
jnst as she does moHt thlogs.
Other tVwnsare talking about
paring their streets Vinita has a
force of men at work paving
ben
elected
over
rueScfay
Carter Harrison
mayor of Chicago Tuei
Btuart the republican candidate
by a majority of 6943.
Put a little of the Balve of com-
mon sense on your sore places
and turn in and help make Vinita
a bigger and better towo.
The movement for non-partisan
municipal elections has swept
across the whole American conti-
nent like a tidal wave.
The Chieftain Ts democratic
enough to acquiesce in the will of
the majority without grumbling
and growling all the year about it.
The Muskogee Phoenix says
that a letter from Col. Pliny L.
Soper was read at a political rally
in that town and received vocifer.
ous applause.
President Roosevelt began his
strenuous journey across the con
tinens this week by riding a loco
motive acrooss a stretch of Penn
eylvania mountains.
The first issue of the Wagoner
Republican reached this oQice to
dar. It is published by tbe
Beardsle printing company and
is a twelve page four column pa

acres of land to allot by supple-
mental agreement or In some other
way but really there will hardly
be much honor or emolument in
the office of principal chief.
Now that city politios can be
given a much needed rest let tbe
people of this good town turn at
tention to tree planting for a short
time. One of tbe places that de
mands Dublio attention Is the
grounds at tbe publio school. This
fine block should be planted In for
est trees Elms Maples Box eld.
ers etc. Tbe campus ought to bs
in the hands of a competent land
scape gardener and this town can
afford to spend a considerable sum
In beautifying it.
Capt. John 8. Hammer died at
Ardtnore yesterday. He was
prominent republican politician
and had been postmaster at Ard-
more and at tbe time of his death
was United States clerk.
Tbe Chieftain is for anybody or
anything that is for the good of
Vinita. There is nothing in its
makeup that would cause it to try
in any way to cripple the efforts
of those who are trying to advance
the common interests of our peo
pie.
Tbe announcement of the union
station soon to bs built at tbis
place was received with ap
proval and much rejoicing by the
people of Vinita generally. There
is certainly no one thing so badly
needed in this city as a commodi-
ous union depot. The exceeding-
ly friendly relations of these great
lines of railway for one towo is of
no small consequence .
There is a movement on foot to
nomioete E. L Cookion of Illi-
nois district for tbe office of prin-
cipal chief of the national ticket.
The convention will m-et the lat
ter part of tbe present month or
early in May. Cookson is perhaps
tbe strongest canditate tbe na.
Jionals could put op sod. the
C'bIeftain nominated him two years
.agaor Chief but eince that time
be has not proven to be as pro-
gressive as be gave promise of be-
ing and voted and worked against
tbe agreement ratified last sum-
mer. But the Downing! will have
to have fast man to beet Cook-
eon !...... .....
Now tbe scramble for tbe next
Chieftaincy will begin in earnest
but just why any one would seek
the place is not altogether appar-
ent. Tbe next Chief will no doubt
have the privilege or rather the
tack of eiguing tbe deeds to thfc
allotted lands of tbe Cherokee peo
pie. But it is not quite clear bow
an executive could grow rich or
great simply by siting bis nam.
There will be upwards of a milium
More than five hundred persons
competed for the prize lately of
fered by Chicago trust company
for the beat thoughts on the sub
ject of saving. The man who re
ceived the first prize wrote: "Sav
ing producee a peace of mind un
known to bim who in time of mis-
fortune must depend on tbe bounty
of bie friends. Determine to save
for will-power is tbe prime essen
tial. Deposit regularly. Lay aside
some portion of each week's or
income. Deposit extra and unex
nected receipts." It is a short
but sound and comprebeneive ser
mon on thrift and enlists in i
cause two forces that sometimes
fight on opposite sides: will power
and habit.
