A. Jnpanne friend of mine lived in
Paris for n yenr. Waking ou a win-

snow upon the trees. What was bia
astonishment when with his compan-

Hols to Bud. It entirety solitary and
deserted. The two .Inpouusc paid their
vows to beauty In the whiteness and
the stillness of the morning and at last
beheld In the distance two other fig-

forted. "Wo am not quite alone"
they said to tustneelres. There vrero

Fdest Qsnuinft Speelmem Found In ihe
Province of Astrakhan.
Tbe collection of eyestones Is a
dying Industry. In New York tbe prin-
cipal sources of supply are Bailors wbo
toocfa the Baltic sea. and as might be
imagined the supply la precarious.
ISyestonos are analogous in some re-
spects to heaoara as they are a con-
cretion found In the stomach of tbe
European crawfish. Most of tbe genu
ine eyestones crabs' eyes crabstoues
or Lapilll rancrorum are procured in
tbe province of Astrakhan In Euro-
pean Russia.
There appears to be some confusion
regarding tbe nature of the eyestone
for some authorities speak of it as a
emtc.etlon in the stomach of a certain
and others as of a peculiar shell
formation which Is separated from the
erab at the time it sheds Its shell.
Tbe so called crab's eyes are found
tolly developed nt tbe end of Biiimner
as the' crabs begin to shed their shells.
It Is noted that these concretions nre
absorbed Into the stomach of the crab
dnring the shedding season and there
pulverised nil 1 absorbed the dissolved
calcareous substance being uaei it is
supposed for the formation of n new
shell. When those calcareous shells
arc not normally developed snd ob
sorbed it Is obsered the; tbe ' juJdlnr
process Is interrupted and tne crab
dies an early death. Americau Xtx
