THE FARMER'S WIFE
Is very careful about her churn. She scalds it thoroughly after using
and gives it a suu bath to sweeten it. She knows that if her churn is
sour it will taint the butter that is made in it. The stomach is a churn.
In the stomach and digestive and nutritive tracts are performed pro-
cesses which are almost exactly like the churning of butter. Is tt not
apparent then that if this stomach-churn is foul it makes foul all which
is put into it?
The evil of a foul stomach is not alone the bad taste iti the mouth
and the foul breath caused by it but the corruption otthe pure current
of blood and the dissemination of disease throughout the ty v. Dr.
Pierce's Goldeu Medical Discovery makes the sour and fon jmach

In this way it cures blotches pimples eruptions scrofulous swellings

An Awful'Cough Cured.
"Two years ago our little girl haij a
touch of pneumonia which left her
with an awful cough. Sho had spells
of coughing just like ono with the
whooping coorIi and some thought
the would not get well at nil. We
got a bottlo or Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy which acted "like k charm.
She stopped coughing and got stout
and fat." writes Airs. Ora Dussjard.

That wild animals becomo extremely
ame Is well known. The wild quail
f southern California will enter gar-
lens and nest there and In tho protect-
d season I have seen a-flocl. stand In
i countr) i nad a Jaunty male between
hem. and my horse not SO feot away

with reluctance says a writer In tho
Scientific American.
Several years ago some residents
in one of the channel Islands of south
grn California Introduced a number Of
black-tailed deer which were protect-
ed to such an extent that In time they
discovered that they were privileged
characters and assumed nearly the ab-
solute contempt for human holngs
hold h the stirred bulls of India that
crowd mrsi and women from the rod.
They pei sisted In entering gardens
lav and nieht. destroying the plants
in.) finally to locate them the dwellers
on the I-laud had bells fastened to
them. One linck made his home near
the town of Cibrlllo and walked about
the iddtc Hiid over the h"ls with the
freedom of a dog When a boat land-
ed off the pier the buck rati down to
irreet the tievtrcomers awd- share their
lunch and became a weloome guest at
b.u-bceuos and lobster and clam bake.
Nearly all animal life Is protected at
this Ulan 1 1 hate counted half a hun-
dred bald etelcs in an eleven-mile run
hae seen thein take a large fish from
the water within easy gunshot and
thev build their nests on pinnacles
that are not-difficult or approach. The
sea birds are equally tame. Gulls
gather In flocks a few feet from those
who feed them. In the winter Mocks
of cormorants swim Into the bays and
s-o ho tame that they merely dlvldo
when a boat passes and fishermen
often find that the cormorants take off
halt almost a3 fast as they can put It

a long-winged bird resembling the
I ptrel follow my line under water at
a cust using Its wings to Ily along and
lake the halt and at times scores of
sea birds are seen inshore feeding up-
on small shrimps paying no attontlon
to observers photographing them.
The most remarkable Illustration of
tameness to be seen here Is that of tho
ea lions. Vox ages the animals hare
held possession of a mass of rooks on
tho shore of the Islands. A fow yonrs
ago many were killed by vandals but
laws were passed nnd for n number oT
years the sea lions have been protect-
ed and the rookery has incronsod In
size until a split has recently occurrod
and another sottlomont has been es-
tablished ltlfw up tho Island.
It has been the custom for yoars for
fishermen In cleaning tholr fish to toss
the refuse Into the bny and tho' sea
lions formed the habit of coming down
to 'the bay at this time to dine there-
upon. At first only one or two came;
now a hand of two lurge bulls and sev-
eral females make their headquarters
at the bay to spend most ot their time
there constituting a valuahlo sanitary
corps as they eat every fragment of
fish the gulls joining in the feast.
When not feeding the sen lions pass
the time lyln within a few feet of the
beach sleeping or playing the females
and young leaping from the water and
going through various tricks of Inter-
est to the looker-on.
But a few feet away from the sea
lions are the boat statui of the fish-
ermen and boatmen and btts are
moving out and over the sea ilons
constantly yet they are apparently ob-
livious to the men. who never molest
thorn. This has had a peoullar result.
The enormous animals have become so
tnmo that tlioy nlniost allow the men
to touch thorn And rondlly oomo out
upon the shore to fond from their
hands. It so hnpponed that I was up-
