to sthe amount of $125CH)0 and the
case Is bei.s bitterly fought
The aemmtfonal murder of J Bur-
dette occwred several months ago.
He carried life Insurance amounting
to over $200000 and some of the in-
surance cnnpanles rfcfuse to pay the
policies on the ground that Burdette
was not killed but thai he commuted
suicide for the purpose of benefitting
his estate The principal defendant
In thlB suit in the Penn Mutual Insur-
ance company in which Mr. Burdette
carried $100000 insurance. Other
companies carrying policies amount
lug to $36000 have refused to pay but
the .companion that carried tins other
$05000 have paid over the rconoy.
Mr. Burdette was proslden of the
lSufaulu National bank a merchant
doing a largo business and ho was
wei! known all over Ore territory hav-
ing been active in politics 'for a good
itian years. He had also a good
many bitter enemies. Ono night
while hia wlfo was in Muskogee at-
tending tho thoatro Mr. Burdetto
stepped out into his back yard and
was nhot In the head with a revolver
and Wiled. Tho Insurance companies
claim that they have at mo evidence 1
that ho killed himself though no
weapon was found near. When Bur-
dette died his head was reeling on the
well curb. The insurance companies
claimed that he had placed himself In
that position In order that when he
shot himself the weapon would drop
in the well. They caused the well to
be searched but at the time It was
announced that no weapon was found
In the bottom. The well was guarded
for day The Insurance company
sent expert witnesses to examine the
body before It was Interred. ntl It Ibj
claimed that tho witnesses will show
that the revolver which Ulllod Bur-
dette was within two foet of his head
when it was dltcharged. Friends of
Burdetto claim that It Is aB dear a
case of assassination as has ever been
recorded and tliat the talk of sulcldo
is absurd.
Whllo Mr. Bui dette was doing a.
large business It was found that ho
ulso had large liabilities as well as
credits and when his ostnto was ready
for settlement hla wealth was not as
large as was generally believed. The
provisions of his will were rather un-
usual. He provided that his wife
who is a handson woman should
have certain property amounting in
$36000 and an Income of $2000 per
year. In case she hould marry again
this income was to be reduoed to $100
per year. There were no children and
the rsmaludiM- of the estate was left
to various relatives.
