Mme. Emma Nevada after an ab-
sence of a dozen years appeared lust
night at the Metropolitan opera house
in concert and achieved a distinct suc-
cess. Tho audience was large by far
tho largest of the scasou.and tho little
diva was rapturously received
A few years ago Mmo. Nevada sang
in Philadelphia during a brief opoa
seasrn but otherwise has been abroad
where she has achieved unusual suc-
cess particular. y in Italy and Spain.
In the latter country since the war she
has been received with less favor and
that she was hissed in ono of its thea-
ters last spring is well remembered.
She comes back with maturrd powers
as an artist with her light but beau-
tiful voico under perfect control and
with a persons! charm that haB in-
creased. Tl)o lesser lights on tho programme
acquitted themselves creditably. But
it was Nevada people came to hoar.
She Bang in tho mad scene from t'Lu-
ola" with consummate art and rccolv-
ed a deserved ovation. The "Hell
Song" was given charmingly and tho
audience wouldn't rest until it had
two encores ono of which was "Tho
Mocking Bird" to which she played
her own accompaniment. There were
those who doubted if she could All the
Metropolitan opera house but last
night it was demon' tratcd that bhe
could .even when drawing her notes
down to the finest thread in tho di-
minuendnes for which she is bo well
known It Is a flute-Uke voice full of
color in no wise dramatic but always
delightful.
