Some Facts About th Atmotphcrlo
Current That F-r Person Ex-
cept Aviator Know.
We hear much from the airmen of
"air waves" but the subject Is of la-
terest aside from aviation. A i a mat-
ter of fact we have our bel ig sub-
merged in "waves" to which the
greatest waves of the ocean are nier
ripples in point of eiza.
Wben a current of air blows across
a water surface waves are produced.
and when a current of air blow
across a nrface of quiet air or air
having a different motion from tL
first cur'ent then air waves will be
produced.
Tbeee atmospheric waves hava all
the phenomena of water waves-
troughs crests foaming breaking
and spraying but since the qualities
of air and water are so different the
air waves have dimension more than
twenty-five hundred times those of the
corresponding water waves.
TtniB the greatest ocean waves of.
perhaps twenty-five feet would have
atmospheric counterpart extending
upward a distance of ten or twelve
miles above the earth's surface. The
passage of these huge air waves would
be felt by us since they would cause
a stirring up of the air at the earth's
surface somewhat similar to that pro-
duced by the passage of water waves
ovei- shoal places.
The undulating movement of such
air waves would account in part for
the Intermittent gusts of wind that
we notice so frequently In storms.
The presence of these waves Is
also indicated by the existence of cer
tain kinds of regularly formed cloud
groups in which each cloud marks the
crest of an air wave.

Australian Voting.
Our "Australian ballot" eystem
was made in Massachusetts but It
old name still holds though tbe Aus-
tralian have never bad anything like
it their ballots being a decided im-
provement on "the Australian ballot."
The names of all candidates for an
office are p'flced one under another
in alphabetical order and without
party designation. Tbe voter must
use some discernment In voting and
the tends of a party organization are
weakened. Two new Ideas have been
adopted. The man absent or five
mileB removed from his voting place
casts his ballot by mail or under an-
other law he may declare bis eligibil-
ity for voting In Australia and cast
his ballot at the place where he hap-pr-nB
to be. Th first Idea though la-
beled "new ' In tne cable dlspatche.
Is not entirely so. for tbe New Zea-
landers bare bad a somewhat similar
provision for some years and It evi-
dently has worked so satisfactorily
as to commend it to their neighbors.
The Au8tralan feature of balloting
transmitted to us was the secrecy and
omclal character of the ballot rathef
than its arrangement.

Perl the Best They Can Wear and
Turquoises Also Are Appro-
priate.
Pearls are Jewels par excellence
and a necklace of pearls Is a frequent
gift for a first ball while a pearl
cross has been Bupposcd to be a pro-
tection from evil. A modern Indian
novelist mentions the nine rows of
pearls worn by a Hindu maiden and
the same jewel Is worn by brides
alike In the west and tbe cost.
In the oiden times the daughters of
Hindu rajahs are said to havn signi-
fied their choice of a husband by
throwing round the neck of the chosen
lover a chain of pearls and of flowers.
At a recent high cast? Indian wed
ding when the rite cf the "Pehra
bande" or "Tying cf (he Veil" w.is ob
served the Sareb or veil consisted o(
"strings of pearls" edged with a ruby
fringe.
Turquoises are also Jewels for girls.
The forget mo not azure of the stencf
is the symbolic color of youth arid
hope. They are beautiful surrounded
by diamonds tnd there is a pretty oln'
saying that the wearer of a turquois.-
wlll never lack friends. Delicate col-
ored gems such as peridots and tci.r
mallnes chrysopfcrise and cornelian
are also much in favor with the young-
