High protection apologists continue
to harp on the small sugar tax im-
posed by the new tariff law and make
special effort to prejudlco the minds of
the farming community against tho
Dosiocratle party on that account.
Whllo a perfectly legitimate article of
taxation so long as revenue for the
support of the government must bo
raised by our present system yet be-
ing an artlclo of necessity and of uni-
versal consumption It ought to be
placed on tho free list and will be
beyond doubt by the next session of
congress despite the combined oppo-
sition of tho Republicans and their
powerful ally tho sugar trust and old
PcfTor.
It is estimnted that the sugar tax
will produce about 538000000 auntui'-
ly ecry cent of which will go into
the treasury. If any apology were
necessary from tho Democratic party
to tho farmers for this Imposition of
the small tax on sugar it is quite
enough to Call their attention to the
fact that the removal of the tax on
agricultural Implements and machin
ery amounting lo 810000000-not u
penny of which wont to thu govern-
ment but the wholo going to enrich
the manufacturer.! and combines thnt
control those urt'clos !s mora than
enough to compensate thuu to that
t io adjustment of the tuxes on these
two articles aloue transfers tho nggre
gato paid by tho farmers from the
coffers of private corporation? Into Un-
peopled treasury.
Hut this Is not the only compensa-
tion the farmer gets by the now tariff
law. Heretofore under Republican
high protection he paid a tux of 81.50
to 83 per 1000 feet on all tho lumber
he used in building a houso for his
family a shelter for his stock and
taxed Implements and to enclose his
premises nil of which Is now uutaxi d
while on the wilu and nulls he uses
the tax Is reduced 31 lo 35 per cent bo-
low the McKlnley rate. To these may
Le added cotton bagging and ties nnd
grain bags which arc now on tho free
Hit to -ay nothing of the 100 other
articles used by farmers as well as
everybody else from which the tax is
removed and the hundred of other
on which it has been reduced from 10
to J0 per cent.
With such n showing as this and it
is only partial of benefits the farmer
receives directly by tho operation of
tho new law It requires gall such as
Republican protootlouistsonly possess
to try to arouse the prejudices of
farmers against tho Domocratio party
on tho llirasy pretext sot up. Tho
farmers aro not fools as such demo
gogues would make thorn appear and
will resont thu insult at the polls by
voting tho Dainoaratic ticket.

In his attempt to explain or justify
his sooner bill Mr. Flynn tolls the
people tnat he did it at the iuslanco of
the Interior department. When it Is
remembered that Mr. Flynn every
time he had an opportunity to do so
deuouueed that department nnd its
chief by name the absurdity of his
claim Is too npparunt to bo considered
a moment. Had tho secretary of thu
interior desired any such legislation
does any one suppose ho would have
gone to any one who had villlfU-d and
traduced him when his own party had
control of congress? Would bo not
the rather have requested thu chair-
man of tho public lauds committee to
which the Flynn bill was referred
and through which all that class of
legislation must bo reported to the
house to prepare and report a bill to
that purpote?
And bastdes if the interior depart-
ment were as dishonest aud corrupt as
Mr. i'.yun would have had (he coun-
try bollevo Jt to be if ho was the
faithful watchful and honest reprc
tentative he ought to have been
would ho not have refused lo act as
tbt! ngtmt of ilia department In tho
mtittor nnd exposed Uic trick at
once?
Your every attempt to explain your
connection with this most discredit-
able transaction lo enll It by no worse
tin mo only affords additional proof In
condemnation of your duplicity. Mr.
Klynti. You would have done better
to stick to your first acknowledgment
that you eouldn't resist tin pressure
that was brought to boar upon you by
the parties In Interest In the territory

is do more roon; for uncertainty about
what the policy of the government is

and distrust which the loaders of tho
Republican party instituted and lcept

villainous misrepresentation nnd tra-

We hear it hinted that certain of
Mr. Flynn's partisans aro trying to
compromize the damaging effects of
the Flynn sooner bill by insinuating
that this paper manufactured tbo text
of the measure as it appears In those

introduced and that tho matter pub-
lished is simply a campaign triclc. To
