guess coming. The moonlight school
is a fact in Grady county and it is al-
ready producing results.
In proof of this assertion we call
your attention to a little item appear-

today. The matter is only briefly
mentioned but it is significant enough
to be worthy of being "featured" to
use a new paper term.
Our correspondent informs us that
one item in his weekly news budget
was written by a moonlight school.

REAL ROAD BUILDING.
- That vast sums of money have been
wasted on efforts to buiid roads will
scarcely be questioned and it ts likely
that much more will be spent in the
same nay unless the taxpayers are suf-
ficiently sagacious and enterprising to
' see that road improvement is carried
on according to methods that have
proved successful. The new Okla-
homa road law opens the way for good
roads provision being made raising
revenues for that purpose but It is
up to the people of the various com-
munities to see that funds derived ty
taxation are spent in a way that wiil
produce the largest results.
Simple as it seems road building is
a business that requires some tech-
nical knowledge and skill. Recognizing

spaces of every few hundred feet along !

water which has gathered in the

A road properly built generally will
uot have an average grade of more
than 5 per cent. By "per cent of
grade" is meant the' number of feet
the road rises or "climbs" for every
100 feet ol its length On a road of
1 per cent grade the horses need pull
the load up a rise of coiy 1 foot for
every 100 feet they travel. It has been
found that where a horse can pull a
lull load on level ground; he is able
to pull only one-half that load on a
5 per cent grade and only one-fourth
that load on a JO per cent grade. More
trips must be made to and from mar-
ket on a road with Just one bad hill
in order to haul the same amount that
can be hauled at one trip on a level
road. '"

. THE RANDOM SHOT. .
I shot an arrow into the air
II fell in the distance I knew not
where
Till a neighbor said that it killed his
; calf
And I had to pay him 6.
I bought some poison to slay some
rats.
And a neighbor swore it killed his
cats.
And rather than argue across the
fence
I paid him $4 and 50 cents.
One night I sat sailing a toy balloon
And hoped it wovld soar till it reached
the moon;
But the candle fell on a farmer's straw
And he said I must settle or go to law.
And that is the way with the random
shot
It never hits in the proper spot

think so smart
May leave a wound in some fellow's
heart. Handshake.
