Chautauqua begins tomorrow.
And there was Dr. HarneJ another candidate who feel but little short
of reachin gthe goal and who deserves to be congratulated on the race he
made even if he didn't win! -
"Music hath charms to soothe the savage" said Jonas Cook editor "pro
tern" of the Journal yesterday in advsrtising the band concert and then he
immediately added "Come and brng your folks." A pretty bad break Jonas.
The "folks" will stand for your "potry" but they won't stand for being called
savages.
The editor of the Tuttle Times has the distinction of having spun off
the longest editorial ever written. He devoed over four columns this week
to proving that the disfranchisement of soldiers is unconstitutional and
then didn't prove it except to his own satisfaction. The Times is advised
to check up the constitutions of the various states Kansas for example and
see if this "unconstitutional" provision is found in any of them. The Kansas
constitution after prescribing the qualifications for suffrage says "but
nothing herein contained shall be deemed to allow any soldier esaman or
marine in the regular army or navy of the United States the right to vote."
If this clause is unconstitutional why has it never been declared so by the
courts?

weeks. Secretary Taft is well enough
to continue his trip west this morn-
ing but was persuaded to rest.
Kansas City June 15 Judge Mc
Pherson in the district court this af-
ternoon heard arguments of the state
and Missouri railroads involving the
2-cent and maximum rate acts. In
the meantime the railways are con-
tinuing to do business under the old
laws.

Boise Idaho June 15 The pro-
secution in the' Haywood case is
sketching through a multitude of in-
cidents in the story told by Orchard.
The state claims testimony broueht
out by the defense has afforded a re-
markable opportunity to corroborate
Orchard.
Chicago June 15 The Olvirmic
theater the oldest vaudeville house in
Chicago was practically destroyed by
lire at midnight. The loss will ex
ceed one hundred and fifty thousand
dollars. Fire Chief Horan and sev-
eral of his men were hurt by falling
walls. .
YESTERDAY.
Yesterday will never come again. Yesterday will appear with us at the
last day and will either testify in our favor or will witness against us. If
we were kind and honest yesterday cheerfully bearing the heat and burden
of the day then we willingly leave it behind pressing on through today with
its joys and sorrows its toil and tears on to tomorrow hopefully trustfully
thankfully ever gladly doing each iduty as it appears to us. The beautiful
yesterday with its smiles contentment utilized opportunities and possibili-
ties and joy has passed into eternity leaving behind it peaceful memories
and bright anticipations while the ugly yesterday with its unavailing tears
tcgrets remorse lost opportunities and possibilities and woe has taken up
its abode in the eternal past leaving haunting memories and apprehension.
Yesterday will never come again and let us file with the passing years a
bright lovely record of sweet helpful yesterdays whose reading in eternity
will merit the praise of men angels and the Righteous Judge. Selected.
an francisco June 15 It wis
learned at midnight that Mayor
Scmitz whose whereabouts up to to-
night was unkonwn was in the
Branch county jail where he spent the
night. Formal motion for his re
lease under bond will be argued to
day.
Deadwood S. D. June 15 The
Black Hills have been entirely cut off
from communication -with the out
side since the evening of the 12th.
A rain and hail storm' lasting six
hours washed out railroad bridges and
tracks and destroyed telegraph wires.
Three people are known to have lost
their lives.
THE GUBERNATORIAL CONTEST.
The contest between Mr. Haskell and Mr. Cruce for the first democratic
nomination for governor of Oklahoma will form a charter in the nnlitirnl
hif-tory of the state. It was in many respects a most remarkable fight but
chiefly so in the bitterness with which it was waged on both sides. Never
was a. campaign in which more villification charges and counter charges
criminations an I recriminations were hurled at each other by the opposing
parties.
Now that the smoke of battle is clearing away Political Philosopher
has a chance to get in his work to view it in an impartial unprejudiced
iitht and see how it happened. The view thus taken will not assume that
Mr. Haskell or Mr. Cruce and their respective following represented all the
perfection or all the crookedness and cussedness attributd to them. Men
are men not angels; and polities as played in the practical way is politics
not religion; and on both sides were displayed the virtues and vices that
all ordinary men are possessed of. It is to be assumed in the main how-
ever that both sides were actuated by honest motives in seeking to advanca
their cause and their candidate.
In attempting to account for the result the coarse charges in some
Cuses amounting to criminal accusations may be set aside for it is evident
that they exerted no determining influence. While no direct assault was
ever made upon the personal character of Mr. Cruce bv inference he was
as""ieu anu Lne marges against Mr. Haskell were the most shameful that
could be conceived of. And yet with all tie affidavits and evidence of every
kmo- th" 0Pn'9 rH - bMic-ve them; doubtless both sides lost as much as
they won by tV- campaign of abuse. Political Philosopher fin-Is that a
great variety of factors entered into the final result but the most important
of all was the personality of Mr. Haskell and the unequivocal forceful
radical stand he took upon the issues. That Haskell is a born leader that he

Guthrie June 14 The Supreme
court of Oklahoma adjourned at noon
until June 25th when an opinion will
be handed down on the constitutional
convention question which was ar-
gued this week. Chief Justice Bur-
ford said: "I am authorized to state
for the members of the court that the
cases are of much importance to th
people and that the court Wil submit
an opinion covering all of the ques-
tions. The court wants to deal fairly
with the parties in the case and ex-
pect them to do the same with the
court; that the matter that was call-
ed to the court's attention yesterday
by Judge Pancoast the publishing of
the election proclamation was not in
good faith with the court and that if
an opinion is not handed down by the
25th. it would be because the election
proclamation had not been with
drawn." Judge Ledletter in reply
declared that the proclamation had
been withdrawn and was printed with-
out the consent of the defendants in
the case and that steps would
be immediately taken to stop futher
publication.
It is said that each of the justices
will write an opinion on the case giv-
ing his individual views on the ques-
tions involved.
