ask myself In regard to religions is not
'Arc they true?' bat 'Are they aids to

Miss Snids Mori Is a Japanese stu-

Is n wealthy banker of Yanagows
Klushu. Japan and nil the family are
devoted Christians. Miss Mori has
come tn this count rj to flt herself by
study for missionary work In her na-
tive country. "I came oTer" she says
"with Mr. and Mrs. Davis who are
mtssonnrlcs to Japan sent out by the
Methodist church. My father was con-
verted and baptized into the Presbyte-
rian church and I was educated in Ja-
pan in a mission school directed by the
Congrcgatlonallsts. I do not think the
denomination makes any difference.
All 1 cure for is the Christian church at
large and so I do not pay any atten-

creeds.

Strange as It may appear these
gloomy and appalling features of our
nature may be best comprehended and
portrayed by the purest and noblest
minds. The common idea Is that
ovcrw helming emotions the more they
are experienced can the more effectual-
ly bo described. We have one strong
presumption against this doctrine.
Tradition leads us to believe that
Shakespeare though he painted so
faithfully and fearfully tho storms of
passion was a calm and cheerful man
The passions are too much engrossed
by their objects to meditate on them

THE BEST COSMETIC.
It la the Open Air and I'lenty of Kierelee.
As far as complexions go there is no
reason In tho world why women whose
lives arc spent In the fresh pure air of
tho country untainted by smoke and
dust should not have the finest skins.
!y exercise In tho open air violent
enough to produco perspiration and by
regular bathing tho proper ventilation
of tho home combined with good nutri-
tious food they can obtain this crown-
ing glory of womanhood. Thero Is no
cosmetic equnl to a flower garden. The
woman who cultivates roses Is apt to
have them reflected in her glowing
checks and there is nothing so good
for a nervous low-spirited naturo as a
genuine lovo for growing things. No
woman's life can be monotonous when
she is anxiously waiting to sco the
coloring of her new pansics nnd Is not
quite sure whether those lilies will be
pink or whtte. She will dream of her
flowers and her first impulse in
the morning will bo to run out
and see what marvels of open-
ing buds the night has brought
forth. The labor of tho entire day will
seem easier because of these few mo-
ments among the flowers and tho de-
sire to get back to her treasures will
prove a wholesome incentive to a rapid
and vigorous doing of her household
tasks. Somo women complain how-
ever and say that it always gives them
a headache to work In tho garden.
This la generally the case because they
rush Into the hot sun In tho very hot-
test part of the day often cither with-
out anything on their heads or with
some hat the weight of which is enough
to cause pain in Itself. If every woman
living on a farm would wear nothing
upon her head during the time spent
by her In working around her domain
but the old-time sun-bonnet of her
grandmother's day she would bo able
to enjoy outdoor exercise without pain.
There Is no better shield for the eyes
and complexion and tho back of tho
neck where a delicate woman feels tho
heat particularly Is shaded by tho
cape. This bonnet should bo mado of
dark green gingham or some other
easlly-laundcred material; white or
lighter colors arc ilazlilng for tho oyes
and so induce headaches. For tho chil-
dren these little sun-lonncts aro excel-
lent. Asa rulo women in the country

Midnight.
The Countess Gesundholmer (nee

The count was talking in his sleep.
True when sho had exchanged her

all thoughts of his past but with a

to know for the sake of knowing.
Hreathlessly she hearkened. From
