Wood Believed to Be Basis of Jet Sub-
stance Long Ued for V rious
Ornaments.
Jet Is a sort of lignite or anthracite.
Often cut and polished which has the
peculiarities in weight and texture of
Uie hardest kind of anthracite. It has
been used in Britain since before his-
toric times and was common In the
bronze age. from which times have
come jet beads buttons rings armlets
and other ornaments.
Julias Caesar alludes to the abund-
ance of jet In Britain and jet orna-
ments are found with Roman relics
In them. The monks used jet for ros-
ary bonds at Whitby Abbey and at
Whitney where It was found In tho
greatest abundance. It occurs In Ir-
regular masses In hard shale known as
jet rock.
Often microscopic examination dis-
closes coniferous wood In the compo-
sition of Jet. It Is probable that jet
was developed when masses of wood
drifted down a river rotted or became
water logged and sank out at sea. be-
coming gradually buried in a deposit
of fine mud w hi oh hardened eventually
Into shale. Sometimes drops of hi-
tumln are found in jet cavities which
(seems to confirm the suspicion of its
wood origin. Detroit News.
