How to Eliminate Smut in
Wheat and Oata.
(IIV C. K SA.N1I0IIN.)
Tliero are somo diseases of wheat
and oatH commonly called "Smuts"
thnt frequently becomo bo provalont
that a largo percent of these crops aro
rendered worthless.
The stinking smut sometimes ap
pcarH in wheat to such an extent that
the lattor is rondorcd unfit for milling
purposes Unless oats nro kept frco
from tho smut tho latter can easily
depreciate tho yield of an average
Held to an amount equal to tho taxes
of an ordinary sized farm.
A description of tho disease Is un-
ncccssaiy since all farmers aro ac-
quainted with it in somo form. A briof
history of tho disease Is as follows:
Seed growing in an infected field or
threshed with n machine in which in-
fected seed has been lately threshed
jr handled In infected containers such
as sacks will carry the disease so that
when planted tho lattor will attack the
young plants nnd grow in thorn until
tho tlmo of ripening at which timo it
is most conspicuous bIuco it prevents
tho seed from -properly maturing.
These Infected seeds convey tho di
sense oithor directly or indirectly to
tho next crop if they nro not properly
disinfected.
Treatment: Uoforo sowing tho seed
may bo treated with formaline nnd
water or hot water. Either of theso
treatments if properly applied will
control tho dlscaso. The best and most
practical ono is tho formaline treat-
ment which is applied as follows:
l'lnco tho seed wheat or onts on a
canvas or Iloor in order that It can bo
spread out to a thickness of two or
three inches. I5y using a sprinkling
can or spray pump thoroughly moisten
It with fotmallno and water. (Dilute
1 lit. formaline which is a -10 percent
solution of formaldehyde with 50 gal-
lons of water.) Ono gallon of this
'fornmlino wntor" is about tho right
amount per bushel of grain.
Tho grain 'should bo shoveled or
raked back and forth whllo it is being
sprinkled in order to insuro uniform
results. When thoroughly moistened
in this manner tho seed should be
shoveled Into a conical pilo so that tho
disinfectant can continue its work for
at least two hours after which timo it
should bo spread out t'ho same as bo-
foro tho application in order that it
may dty. While drying it should have
proper attention in order to prevent
heating. It can bo sown and should
bo sown as soon as it is dry enough to
be drilled. For broadcast sowing dry-
Inu is unnecessary. Caro should bo
taken however in order to sow tho
right amount per aero If tho seeds
aro slightly swelled nt tho time of
planting it is necessary to add nn ad
dltlonal four or live pounds poracrc.
If proper precautions have not been
usul in duo timo for obtaining tho
formaline and it is impossible to apply
tho fornmlino treatment tho "Hot
Wntor" mothod may bo used. Tho
following directions are about as con-
venient ns nn ordinary farmer can
follow :
Proeuro a reliable thermometer that
will register nt lenst 1150-150 degrees
Fahrenheit. Heat tho water in an or-
dinary "hog scalding" kottlo or other
convenient vessel. Pour into one bar-
rel water which will register 130-H5
d"frroes. Near thisbnrrcl place unothti
containing: water nt n temperature be-
tween 110 nnd 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Plnco another barrel containing cold
water on tho opposite side of tho 13C-
115 degree barrel. In each barrol uso
jix to ton volumes of water to ono of
seed. Loosely woven gunny sacks can
ho used for immersing tho grain
tor of n public man. Tho llo's scven-
I. Icaguo boots gives it such a lead that
truth cannot catch tin with it Tho
First ralso tho temporaturo of the J Senate should nmko an inquliy Into
i-nil u by immersing itsovoral times in
tho 110-120 degrco barrol then In the
1150-115 dogrco barrol ; if tho tempora-
turo of tho water In tho lattor barrol Is
130 degrees fifteen minutes treatment
is necessary ; if 13.1 degrees ten min-
utes; nnd If 115 degrees only five
mlnutcB treatment should bo given.
Thoroughly agitato tho grain by plung-
ing it into tho hot wntor nlout once
per minute nfter slightly draining it
eacli timo nbovo the vessel.
Tho cold water barrel is next used to
reduce tho temperature quickly un-
less tho grain can bo immediately
spread out to dry.
A beam hung in a swivel or placed
on n post of suitable height as a ful-
crum can bo used to a great advantngo
in dripping the gram into the wntor
barrels.
I!y the use of a little Ingenuity nn
ordinary threshing engine ci.n be used
on n largo scale for heating water and
dipping the grain.

The Duty in the Gore Case.
Senator Goro now says ho is sorry for
mentioning the name of Vice President
Sherman in the Oklahoma land scan-
dal. Ho ndds that ho said that Jacob
L Ilamon coupled tho Vico President's
name with this matter and that ho
moroly repeated it. Evidently Goro
thinks that his accountability for the
slander ends right tliero. But tho av-
erage decent American thinks that
Gore should not bo allowed to get oh"
quite so easily. Perhaps the Senate
may have something to say about tho
slander when the session begins in
December.
Vice-President Sherman n far abler
broader and worthier man than Goro
la. Ho was in public lifu long boforo
Goro was known outside of tho voting
precinct in which lie resided. Socially
he stands Immeasurably higher than
Goro. There is no direct question of
veracity in this enso between Goro nnd
tho Vice-President for Goro only re-
peated what ilamon told him. Hnmon
however denies the Goro statement.
As between theso two persons the gen-
oral public is at liberty to draw its own
inferences. If tho divergence were
squarely between the Senator and the
Vlce-Prosldent tho average person
would not henltato to decide in fuvor
of the Vice-President.
Will the Senate take up this matter
and do justice to its presiding ollicer?
Probably it will. The reputation of
tho second oflicor of tho government
ought not to bo allowed to bo nssniled
wantonly. A charge of this sort how-
over unjust it may bo always travels
quickly. Distrustful or vindictive
persons aro prompt to believe any-
thing which is said against tho charnc-
tho Gofo offrnso nnd pass a resolution
of censure. Tho merits or demerits of
the chargo of contemplated fraud In
tho land case have nothing to do with
tho issuo which Goro's mention of
Sherman's name has brought up. In
coupling tho Vice-President's name
oven by Indirection with the land
transaction. Gore assails tho elemental
canons of propriety nnd deserves the
condemnation of the chamber to which
ho temporarily belongs. St. Louis
