MODERN METHODS OF
SHEEP SHEARING GREAT HELP
Many Improvements Over Old Days When Wool Was Gath-
ered by Allowing Animals to Rub and
Squeeze Each Other.
Tho earliest method of securing tho
wool was to drlvo tho sheep quickly
through a narrow passage and tho
squeezing nnd rubbing of ono against
another loosened and detached tho
wool. Later an "Improved" plan was
adopted which in our ears sounds
somewhat inhumane although as a
matter of fact If dono nt tho right
tlmo thero would probably bo uoth-
Ing painful or severe about It. Tho
sheep were caught and tho wool was
pulled from their backs by hand.
This practlco continued for many hun-
dreds of years for although Labnn
and tho othor great pastorallsts of his
tlmo clipped their sheop Pliny tells
us that In his day whon Homo was
In tho zonlth of hor glory "tho sheep
nro not everywhere shorn but tho
custom of pulling off tho wool con-
tinues In 8omo places." It Is to tho
old patriarchs then that wo must
glvo the credit of having set about
getting tho wool In n buslnoss-llko
way nnd from their day until now
practically no chango has taken place
In tho manner and method of clipping.
Most of tho clipping on the big
Border farms In Great Hrltaln Is dono
by tho ordinary shepherding staff.

Vory often a helper Is engaged for a
fortnight or so to push tho work
through but tho heaviest part of the
burden rests on tho shoulders of tho
permanent hnnds. Needless to say it
Is a busy tlmo while It lasts for all
tho other work of tho farm huh to bo
carried on simultaneously nnd It
means for the shepherds getting up
vory early not later than 1:30 and
working Into. Tho permanent hands
having their ordinary work to got

clip so many sheep In a day as ti clip-
por specially engaged for tho Job.
About a scoro per mnn or thoro-

FACTS ABOUT
HENS AND EGGS
How to Multc Mont Money from
Ptiultry
When cholera appears In tho flock
glvo no wnter except that In which
pokorroot has been boiled. This Is both
a preventative and n euro. An Illi-
nois man nays ono of his hens laid an
egg two and sovcn-elghths Inches long
nnd one mid nfteen-slxtoenths Inches
wide tho measurement being taken
with cnllpors.
Ono mnn will win with ono kind of
hen and another man with somo other
breed. It Is with hens ns It Is with
cows. Wo should chooso tho brood yo
llko tho best and then stay wlUi It.
Fowls nro naturally hardy and con-
tagion In n flock In duo to careless-
ness on tho part of tho poultry keopor.
This 1b proved by tho fact that ex-
port poultry ralseru hnvo very fow
sick chickens.
Hens need a bettor plnco In which
to roost than tho trees around tho
house. Of course thoy may survive
thoro; but merely living and returning
a profit aro two different thlnga.
Don't stop feeding tho lions sholls
Just uocnuso thoy nro out of doors
nnd can shift for themselves Thoro
Is no lino not oven nn Imaginary ono
bntween tho days when tho hen likes
shells and 'when she does not. All
days aro alike In that respect.
A woman In Vermont writes that
belief that It was beneficial from tho
point of view of health. In the
North Country the clipping Is usually
dono in an open-fronted covered shed
whero thero is plenty of light. An
old sailcloth or n covering of boards
Is laid over the earthen floor and
theso are kopt clean by sweeping.
Tho nctual method of clipping Is very
similar I fancy in all districts first
tho opening out of tho head neck
brisket and thighs then the curving
round tho ribs from tho belly up to
tho back first on one sldo and thon on
tho other and then tbo quarters. A
well-clipped sheep should show tho
rings formed by tho shears running In
continuous lines nil round Its barrel
nnd up tho qunrters; tliore should be
no break along tho back whero tho
lino traveling up ono sldo meets that
coming up tho other. Theso linos or
llttlo ridges of wool should bo small
nnd of uniform slzo nnd they should
all bo at the same distance from ono
another. It Is qulto wonderful how
much better a nicely-shorn sheep
looks thnn one which Is carelessly
and untidily done. And thero Is more
In It than a mere pleasing of tho eye.
A well-clipped lot of sheep because
of their attractive appearance will
bring as a rule an appreciably high-
er price than another lot dono In a
slovenly manner; this may frequently
bo seen In tho cbbo of ollpped hoggs.
Thero Is also no loss of wool In tho
former case; In tho latter too much
is frequently loft on tho ridges nnd
this of course reduces tho weight of
fleece.
Tho use of clipping machines In-
stead of hand-shears has mado as
yot llttlo headway In tho north; but
moro attention Is being given to tho
Idea yenr by year. On somo of tho
larger farms ono or perhaps two
hand-driven machines aro to bo found;
none Is power driven. If machines
como Into general uso It will bo be-
causo of tho dlfllculty of finding casual
clippers rather than for reasons of
economy. Tho farmers do not antici-
pate nny great saving of expense by
tho uso of machines; they say that
ono man with a machine driven by n
lad or woman worker will not get
through moro thnn life number which
two good men could clip that Is to
say nbout sixty per dny. When tho
woman's wage Is ndded to tho cost
of clennlng. oiling repnirlng nnd de-
preclntlon of tho mnchlne nnd Is set

curred under existing clrcumstnnces

to bo remembered ns stntcd previous-
ly that most of tho clipping Is nl-
ready dono by permanent sorvnnts.

EFFECTIVE EMBROIDERY
FOR SUMMER PARASOL
yK.
Soutache Motif Embellished with
ONE of the daintiest accessories of
tho summer wardrobe Is tho sun-
bhado. A parasol boasts moro virtues
than tho eminently practical ono of
shading tho eyes from tho Impertinent
rays of tho sun. It gives an air of
smartness to the summer girl. The
display of sunshndfes In the shops is as
attractive ns It Is varied and many of
the models shows designs of this
year's vintage.
Decidedly the most effective of tho
parasols for all-around uso arc the em-
brCWercd linens. A woman who Is
clever with her needlo may trans-
form n plnln unassuming linen sun-
shndo Into n chic embroidered affair
that might havo como straight from
Paris on the latest steamer.
A sunshade of whlto llnon with one
of the now square light wood handles
may bo purchased and tho above de-
sign half of which is given applied to
each of tho sections ns shown in the
sketch. Tho design mny bo traced on
tho parasol with carbon paper. It Is
then worked out In coronation brnld
French knots and satin stitch In floss
embroidery Bilk.
PRETTY SILK WAIST.

broidery. Tho long close-fitting sleeves nro
etiflrcled with tucks headed by tho

Shepherd's Plaid Coats.
Few womon feol themselves fixed
for tho summer without n looso top
coat hanging In tho closet. Thoy
seem moro ncccssnry In spring and
summer than In winter.
They nro tho height of fashion nnd
fortunately thoy nro not always ex-

In a dull whlto camel's hair serge and
In a black and whlto shepherd's plaid
Thoy aro loose havo many pockets
nro made with long sleeves and
reach to within four Inches of tho
ankles.
French Dots Half of Motif.
The coronation braid Is to bo sew
on In tho space between tho doubli
lines. This outlines tho flowers leavui
nnd stems and forms an Innor line oc
each flower petal.
Small whlto French knots are
worked between tho two rows of braid
The petals aro filled In lightly wltt
long satin stitches of Irregular lengths
with dellcato pink floss. Tho effect of
tho glossy texture of tho silk Is ex-
tremely pretty.
The center of tho flower Is composed
of ono largo yellow dot surrounded
by tiny rose colored French knots
Tho stem and leaves are of tho coro
nation b'rald and tho latter are filled
In with palo green floss. Tho color
scheme Is charmingly dainty nnd
would harmonize with almost any cos-
tume. A sunshade decorated In this way
would bo an attractive addition to tho
trousseau or to tho outfit for college
commencement festivities. It would bt
highly appreciated as a graduation
gift or wedding present and Is equally
suited to town nnd country use.
FABRICS OF SILK AND WOOL
Latest Decree of Fashion Has Over-
shadowed Everything Previously

There aro moro silk and wool ma-
terials put on tho counters each wool:.
Now ones that wero kopt until lato In

often striped.
Some of the colors como with i

ite Of them all. Tho corded fnlirlnn

even runs into shantung and pongeo.
Thor seems no end to tho latter
weave. It overspreads everything
else. Just why Is hard to say for It
Is rather ragllko vhen mndo up and
cannot bo depended on for graceful
lines.
Some of tho weaves nro delightful
for houso frocks and as tho material
has practically no weight it makes n
most comfortable frock for this hot
