There is a great deal of complaint all
over the county about the way the tuuiN
are handled. Important loreign mail
that should be delivered at any poMoffico
in tho county within ten dayn from its
start from any point in in the U. S.
H often many weeks in gelling to its
destination. Mail going from one point
lo another within the limits of Heaver
oouLiy U often longer on the road than
it ought to lake for a letter lo come from
Asia. As au instance or how mail is
handled tako this example: The Hka-
VF.it HkuaI.I) is usunlly placed in tho
pojioffice for mailing on Thursday even
ing. Tho papers for Logan Lock wood
and Cutter very seldom t;et to their re
spective office before the middle or us
lale as the laat of the following week. The
situation is little butler in any part of
the county. There must be gro neg-
ligenco somewhere and the people are
getting very lircd of the way mail mat-
ters are conducted.

The Weather or 1898.
The past ycur was a remarkablo one
from a weather view. The chnngra ol
temperature in all tho seasons wero ex-
cessive nnd tho rains were local in char-
acter in some localities' being excessive
while sections adj. lining receive searcly
any rain. Following is a nummary uf the
weithrr at this point.
Ic January and February thtro way
more than tho usual amount nf precipi
tation mostly in the form of snow. The
first half of March was very variable
mostly moderate temperature. The last
half of the moiuth ehowed some sur-
prising changes. The thermometer
markings ranged from 8 tu 89 degrees.
The momth ended with high winds and
iiuito cold. The euliro precipitation for
the mouth was only 1.11 italics
April was pui greatly uniureut .irom
uvriage April; but May camo In cold
and cloudy aud remained fO 'until the
7ih when the weaihcr changed lo very
warm the mercury ruuuing up lu 95
deg. on the l!lth and over Oil degrees
on three other days during the month.
There was much thunder and lightning
but tliu riol'ull reached uuly 2 73 inches
I cm than one half the uual amount.
Juue came in hut aud clear and was
a hot month throughout the ihetmom-
eler marking 99 degree on two das !'S
nn two days aud over 90 on ten ilu..
The lowev. mercury at noon was til deg.
Only 1 SO inch of ruin fill during the
mouth being lev than one-fourth the
average for Juue.
July brvko tho record for heat the.
thermometer marking us high as 109
de' iu the ahade. ovir 100 on tight
daja nnd ovir 90 on nevcn oilier days
There was only 1.15 inches of rainfall
during tho luutiih.
August was a ''holy terror" The
heat was intense running oyer 100 deg.
on fourteen days and from 02 lo 9S on
seven other days. A peculiar thing
was that it was partly cloudy or haxy a
a large part of the month. Not a trace
of moisture fell during the month.
I We Lave not a cvnjp'ctc record of
September I u' with the exception ol
ll.reu ur four days nf ul normally cold
neaihcr in the early part of tho month
it was an extremely hot and dry one. '
During mj ahenre from the middl i
of September till I) o.-tuhcr io regular
record was kept. However enough of
a record was inadit tu almw that Oelobcr
had many days of extreme heat. Nov-
ember was coliffr thnii the ay-rage. i
On Decemhrr loih the daily record
wns rrumed nnd has i-im-H been kept
regularly. The list half of Drcetnb r
was very cold tho low markings uf the
thermometer ran.ing from 30 en the
2Ut to xero mthe 31.1. During the
great rain bi ginning at 0. a. m. on the
17th and ending at 8 p. in. on the 18th
the mercury Mimd steadily al 3i only
2 above frcixing point. The entire
precipitation for the month including
the snnw on the 9th was 2.90 inches.
Taking the year altogether it was a
record breaker for heat cold and local
droHih. A atraog'c part of it wns thcio
were nn genuine hot winds during the
summer. i'
