If you want the Ardmoreitk
IA.EDMOKE Friday' April 6.
Work for Ardmore that means
to talk factories. ' She needs them
Ax artesian well in Ardmore
would be a long step toward an
economical waterworks system.
This cold east wind that has
been blowing today is a harbinger
of bad weather and bad weather
emphasizes the need of better side
walks.
A cotton factory will bring
trade to Ardmore that she wi
never be able to control otherwise
The same may be said of a packin
house. These industries draw
trade and trade builds cities.
If the amended contract which
the council ordered drafted yester
day is not signed by the company
the council should proceed at once
to make a contract with a local
man for the work needed. He has
a standing proposition for the
work and it is a liberal one. En-
courage home men.
Dewey's coup seems not to have
caused much consternation in poli-
tical circles the general opinion
being that he is unavailable this
. year. It is quite likely that the
brave old admiral will find himself
in the humiliating position of ask-
ing at the hands of the American
people a favor they cannot grant.
The Boers are advancing in ex-
tended order on Bloemfontein and
it seems that Kruger intends to
make an effort to carry out his
promise of recapturing Bloemfon-
tein in four weeks. Roberts is
calling in and concentrating his
forces to meet the expected attack.
The Boers seem to be on every
. side and Roberts' line of communi-
cation to the south is threatened-
If the burghers should yet succeed
in defeating Roberts it would be a
black day for London.
The democrats in Kentucky con-
tinue to maintain their defensive
position within the limits of the
law and-the leaders announce that
they will make no move until the
supreme court of the United States
passes upon the contest should the
republicans carry the case to that
court. The pacific lawful cause
thus far pursued by the democrats
in contra-distinction to the violent
and unlawful action of the republi-
cans has strengthened them in the
public mind more than anything
else could have. The American
people never endorse violence and
disorder.
For Killing an Indian.
Clarksville Tex. April 5. Sher-
iff Hoffman brought in Alex Wood
colored last night who is indicted
for the killing of a Choctaw Indian
named Amos Jones at Jonesboro
in this county Feb. 18. 1885.
. Wood was arrested shortly after
the killing-but escaped from jail
and has been at large since.
The circular which was distri-
buted all over the city yesterday
morning announcing that the
louses would be numbered and a
directory gotten up was misleading
to say the least. Mayor Gardner
had not authorized the use of his
name in said circular and no con-
tract had been signed by the city
authorizing such work. At the
meeting of the city council yester-
day afternoon the proposed con
tract between the city and the com
pany was amended by inserting a
clause prohibiting the getting up
of a directory without special au
thority from the council and also
by requiring a bond in the sum of
$500 for the correct and faithful
performance of the contract for
numbering the houses and posting
the streets. Until this contract is
signed and the bond given there is
no obligation resting on citizens to
give orders for numbering their
houses and should the contract be
signed there is no obligation on

Indian Territory Governor.
The following comes from Gov
ernor Isarnes headquarters at
Guthrie Okla. who is in daily
correspondence with the depart
ment of the interior. A plan is in
contemplation providing for the
complete reorganization of official-
dom in the Indian Territory. And
from present indications the next
six months will witness the com
plete abolition of the Dawes In-
dian commission the abandonment
of the Indian Territory division
of the interior department; the re
peal of the act authorizing the ap
pointment of Special Agent Wright
who has been known in recent
years by the title cf "governor of
the Indian Territory" and who is
acting as the confidential agent of
the secretary of the interior.
To take the place of all these of-
ficers a civil governor will be ap-
pointed with territorial officers
whose decisions in regard to terri
torial affairs will be final. Such
in brief is the plan now being
considered by members of the com-
mittee on Indiau affairs of the
house and senate. This plan is
said to have met with the approval
of Commissioner of Indian Affairs
Jones who recently made an ex-
tended trip through the Territory.
The appointment of a governor
would necessitate the establishment
of a territorial form of govern
ment and the creation of territorial
offices consisting of a secretary
of state an attorney general a
treasurer and other minor officials

of both nations. These commis-

state that the spring movement of
cattle to the Territory will be
lighter than for several years.
A. P. Iiachal of San Antonio
left Friday for Beeville where he
intends on April 10 to ship 700O
head of his cattle to the Indian
Territory.
Indian Territory buyers who
have been in Runnels county for
several days claim that cattle are
being held at prices that are too
high.
Among the shipments to the
Territory the first of this mouth the
following are booked from San An-
gfln: liird & Mertz 4".n0 head;
Wm. Childress 7000 head.
V. W. Miller general livestock
agent for th Kuty road recently
made a trip through the Indian

shipped from Texas to feed on it.
I think there is plenty of it for all
of the cattle that will go there and
I look for a large number of cows
to the Territory to be grazed
there."
James M. Dobie of Kamarina
who has been up to the Territory j
has returned aud has gone to Bee-1
ville to ship 300 head of his steers
from the latter point to the Terri-
tory. He says that there is plenty
of grass and cattle both in the Ter-
ritory. He thinks that a large
number of cattle that were in the
Territory last year did not find
their way to market then but were
left over and will go from there
this spring in good condition.
II. B. Spaulding of Muskogee
I. T. was in the city en route home
from San Angelo where he reports
conditions good. There has been
plenty of tain and the pastures
are excellent while the cattle are
rapidly improving after a bad
winter condition. Mr. Spaulding
purchased of Coggins Bros. of
Brownwood 2."iO0 steers to be de-
livered in the Territory in April.
The price was $23 per head with a
l." per ceut cut back.

American Flag Hissed.
Havana April 5. Another
American flag hissing incident at
the theatre here shows that preju
dice against the Americans still ex
ists. At the benefit performance
the fiags of America Spaiu and
Cuba were displayed.
The two latter were cheered and
the former was hissed. A vitu-
perative squabble is now going on
between the papers iu regard to
who is responsible for the incident.
The Diario Delomarina attributes
the hissing to Cubans While La
uiseussion says tne r?pamarcls are
responsible.
