SUCH IS NEWSPAPER LITE.
Journeying along between the wick-
ed city of St. Louis and the noUeleaa
ungodly town ot Chicago the other
day a conversation between two
elf-supposed peliticans poured itself
Into our right or mayhap wrong ear.
Quoth one of these gentlemen in the
coarse of a running fire of criticism
of a third party present neither in
person nor by proxy: "Oh he's only
ad n newspaper man." Imperson-
ally personal though the remark was.
a line of thought sprang up in our
mind.
Who Is it that does as mu J 'r tl e
good of. a eonimunltj and leaves un-
done much more for the same reason?
Who is it that must do for others
and be "done for" himself?
Who is it that makes great men ou.
fes of common claj?
Wh ' it that. knows the pitiful
weakies the 'Contemptible pettiness
the wearying selfishness the puerile
pasoions of friend and foe just as he
is known biinielf and guards it all as
he does his honor?
Who is that sees human nature iu
all its littleness and meanness and yet
stauds with all his might and stren-
gth keeping loyal faith with i?
Who is it that must be fair and hon-
orablo when others are unfair and
dishonorable?
Who is it to whom the politician
turus when the fight is hot and his
party cold?
Who is it that must be a patient
pack-horse for tbe faults ot some and
a bhud ass to those of" others?
Who is that must take the dead
man to the door of heaven wueu he
knows if he is getting his deserts be
is roasting in the other place? Who
is it that must make saims out of
iuners?
Who is it that c.uld blast a thou
and fair names and yet injures unue
so much as his own?
Who is that must serve friends and
acquaintance alike aud yet give no
a'gn when he sees that service paused
over unrecognized by even so poor a
reward as thanks?
Who is it that must smile when he
could swear at the cruel xniie-tnrust
of treachery and base betraval?
Wlio is it that must be far seeing boardcrs by feedig him more edi-
yet opon; calculating yet frank; have bles for 25 cents than he had been
the courage of his couviciione yet be used to aud it came uear proving fa-
open to couvicliou?
Who is it that works bis field faith-

uncomplainingly?

II A MAN HUNG.
Rather an amusing incident occur-
red uight before last during the ren
dition of "Esther the Beautiful Queen."
Judge Campbell who so ably repre
sented Hainan made an effort to ac-
complish his exit between the back
scene and the wall. The space was
quite narrow and the judge being
rather corpulent - became wedged.
One ot his trouser legs hung itself
over a protruding nail and for a
while it iooked as thoagli like Hainan
of old he was bund to hang though
not so high. By the exercise of a de-
gree of physical force he fore the
garment loose. When he csme out
again that part of his apparel looked
as though he had been crawling
through a barbed wire fence duriug
watermelon time.
