FORT WORTH'S LESSON.
me newspaper situation m
Fort Worth affords food for
thought just now. Since the
death of the Gazette that city
nas been without a morning
newspaper and has been forced
to look to a rival city for break-
fast table information. There
is no fault to be found with the
quantity and quality of pabulum
furnished by the Dallas paper.
but antagonistic business inter-
ests of the two cities emphasize
in a marked degree the disad-
vantage at which Fort "Worth is
put up by existing conditions.
To make the matter worse the
Mail-Telegram one of the two
excellent afternoon papers pub-
lished there has been drawn
into the Gazette vortex and yes
terday failed to appear. It is
more than likely that its trou-
bles will be shortlived since it
can and must perfect other
arrangements for its printing.
These conditions have brought
home to the people of Fort
"Worth in the most practical
manner possible the necessity
of maintaining a first class pa-
per if they hope to retain the
prestige which their city has
acquired. And incidentally the
object lesson is a salutary one
for all towns. In these days of
close competition and advanced
business methods the newspaper
stands out boldlv as the most
potent institution in any town

Chicago July 10. Definite
results are expected in the
democratic convention today
certainly on the platform and
probably on candidates unless
deadlocks develop. There is
much uncertainty among candi-
dates on the eve of balloting as
there was lefore the convention
opened. Although Bland main-
tains a lead the managers of
other candidates declare josi-
tively that Bland is far
from commanding a major-
ity and very far from
a two-thirds vote. A new phase
to the two-thirds vote lias aris-
en by the possible course of the
gold amendment to refrain from
voting. In that event parlia-
ments differ as to whether the
nomination must lie made by
two-thirds of the delegates pre-
sent or two-thirds of those vot-
ing They ioint out that if sil-
ence on the part of the gold men
reduces the voting strength to
about 00 then 400 would give a
two-thirds vote.
