was threshed with a buggywhip by
a handsome and inuriated woman

ings. O'Shea retreated. It was

J. J. McAlester says that prairie
fires are doing more damage than
evef before in the history of the
nation. All that vast area of pas
ture-south of Stuart on the Choc
taw in tje region of Legal and Ce-
leste and north of Stuart the
flames have eaten up the pastur-
age: and left the ground . bare.
Thousands of cattle are thus de-
prived of. subsistence for the win-
ter and will have to be driven to
different ; parts of the nation.

Cub Reams of Stonewall lost
several thousand dollars' worth of
property by .. a prairiefire. ' The
fire burned off . his ' pasture and
prairie land; his cotton and corn
fields also ' caught ' fire and were
burned off and a great ; deal of
fencing and hay were ' destroyed.
He lost several buildings in the
fire and it is estimated that his
loss will reach $10000.
Sunday the Collins farm near
Linn caught fire and considerable
damage was done mostly to fences
and crops standing in the field.
' Farmers report all the Washita
valley damaged greatly by prairie
and wood fires. : Pecan hunters it
is said go into the Washita bot-
tom for nuts and set fire to - the
leaves to burn them off the ground.
In this way the 'fire gets started
and cannot be controlled till a
great deal of damage is done. ' :
