Washington, will be moved to Tam

barkation to Cuba.
It is not likely that this plan will
be changed. In fact, the only thing
which will prevent its being carried
out will be the complete defeat of
our navy in southern waters, a con-
tingency regarded as impossible.
Sufficient ships are now secure for
transports, and there will be convoys
provided for them.
It will be seen from this decision
that the administration no longer re
gards the maneuvers of the Cape
y erde fleet as a factor in the invas-
ion of Cuba.
The prospect is good that the first
regiments of Missouri volunteers
equipped and ready for service will
be sent into Cuba in the near future.
It is more than likely that the other
regiments, those ordered to Wash-
ington, also will have a chance to
test summer traveling in Cuba.

was done. Cows; calves, chickens and
other things were drowned. Great |

.WASHINGTON LETTER.
Washington, D. C. May 17,1898.
On to Cuba! Thai is the watchword
fef the army that is being gathered at1
terms of Senators and Representative*
from March 4th to May 4th, to take
ef!bct in ML This Is an all around
good amendment, and it ought to be
put into effect. Besides Insuring pleas-
anter weather for Inauguration Day, it
would give Congress an opportunity to
do something more at the short sessions
than to pass the appropriation bills.
A* a rule ropublioau members of the
House do not see what good would be
accomplished by Congress taking a re-
cess for ffyu or ala weeks, after the busi-
ness of the session is cotuplotod. as pro-
vided for 10 a resolution offerod by
Representative Dockery, of Mo., and
roferred to the Ways and Moans com-
mittee, instead of adjourning until De*
cember. Therefore there I* no prob-
ability of the adoption of the resolu-
tion. The only thing Congress has to
do with the conduct of the war is (o
furnish the money that will be needed.
When that has iieen done thero is no
reason—no good reason-why Congress
should not adfourn until Docember.
The administration has shown that it
knows how to conduct war success-
fully.
