Eugene V. Debbs the much abus
ed and persecuted President of the
A. R. tJ. who has been incarcsrated
in jail for contempt for the past six
months, was liberated only a few
days ago. He was met at the train
by a large concourse of his followers
and given a very demonstrative and
hearty ovation. Mr Debbs did not
seem cast down and dejected by h
confinement, but appeared fresh vig
orousand hearty. His sympathizers
are numerous and vied with each
other in showing their appreciation
of his release, alter one of his char
acteristic 4th of July orations, the
crowd dispersed. It is to be hoped
that the lesson he has learned will
be of some beuefit to him in the fu
ture and that hereafter he will
regulate his conduct by the exercise
of good sense and judgment that an
other such trying ordeal may
irom necessity bo inflicted.

comes more and more apparent that
influences of a christian nature pre-
vail throughout the oivilieed world
to a greater or lesB extent. It is ob-
vios to the casual observer, that these
nfluences have much to do in shap-
ing the destiny of a nation, and in-
dicate clearly that the civilizing in
vironments of modern ctmstiam'y
ire not neglected find catlessly for
gotten by the weary sojourner of life
yfars of peace plenty and prosperity
are succeeded perchance by those of

wonderfully natural for us to recog-
nize the beneficence, the kindly prov

verse "who doth all things well' and

A year is a long time and during
which we have our ups and downs,
unwelcome
on the other hand our expectations
and calculations are often realized.

heed the teachings, and counsel of
the good.
We have within us all the require
ments natural propensities true grea-
ness, and good enobling qualites,
essential and requisite to secure our
future well being and happiness,
and to this end we should endeavor
to so regulate our conduct, that hap-
piness shall ever be ours, and feel it
a duty incumbent upon us to rever-
ence and render thanks to Him who
rules, guides, and controls the des-
tiny of men and nations- It is meet
and prijper, and our imperative duty
to pay homage to His holy name, to
thank Him for health strength and
life for His infinite kindness and
mercy shown and above all for the
perpetuation of our great Ameeican
institutions. The wisdom of assem.
