If the republican party is to
be judged by the present rumb j The date for the taking effect
lings of the republican press, it of the law .toremove the tax from
denaturized alcohol will soon be
here, the date having been set
for Jan. 1st, 1900. When this
law was passed we were led to
believe that alcohol for fuel and
light purposes could be bought
for ten or fifteen cents per gallon.
That it would compete with gas-
oline and help break down the
oil trust, but now we are inform-
ed through government bulletins
that the small manufacturer can
not produce alcohol profitably
and that the price to the consum-
er will be at least 40 cents per
gallon. This being the case the
operation of the new law will
have but little to do with the
price of gasoline.

What has become of the slo
gan "From Arapaho to the
Warren amendment"? Since we
come to think about it, that
Flynn-McGuire joint debate
never has been pulled off.
Some of the republican editors
have charged the democrats in
the constitutional convention
with reviving civil war mem-
ories, but how about the State
Capital? when it refers to Pres,
Murray and the democrats of
the convention, as Wm. Murray
and his unre^enerate . rebel
followers.

There is but little doubt but
that the new constitution will
contain a provision providing for
the nominations of U. S. Sena-
tors at the primary elections.
This is as far as it can go with
the constitution of the United
States as it is, but it will not be
very good for the legislature
that turns down a candidate for
the senate who has been endors
ed by the vote of the people and
elect another.
A fellow tells that he went to a
neighboring town since that town
went ''dry" and was unable to
get a drink. He asked a citizen
about it. and the citizen said:
"The only place to get a drink
is at the drug store." He went
to the drug store but the drug-
gist said he coUld only sell it in
case of snakebite. ' * Where can I
find a snake," the fellow inquired.
The druggist said a man kept
one over on the next street. He
went over and saw the man.
"I can't do anything for you,"
said the owner of the snake, "I'm
sold up to four hundred bites
ahead now."—Pemberville (O.)
