A writer urlre* the following bright
picture of a wild turkey hunt in Mex-
ico. |jf is the guest of an old friend in
the San Bernardino bottoms, and from
his haeiendn they thus Rally forth for
their spnrt:
'•We are in the saddle at daybreak,
for the turkeys couie down early to
drink and feed in the open vejras. or
parks. The greyhounds, \shich have
not been fed since sunciowu. have an
rager, hungry look about them that
presages a keen, quick run when the
>ran e is found. It is a gathering en
fomiile. The young ladies are mount-
ed—-one on a stylish-looking pinto: the
other on a ttea-bitten roan, who is bet-
ter than he looks. You are surprised
to see them astride and in semi-mnscu-
linecostume: but 110 matter. Yon will
tec riding to-day. and of ;i kind that
disbars the use of a habit. And then
who could e.\|>ect to use the riata in any
other position?
The Don on his big Mack, and Pedro
(the peon> on iiis clay bank, leading si
pack mule, bring up the rear. For our-
selves we have a pair of iron grays well
inured to the business, and at each
pommel hangs a light buckskin lariat,
made especially for this work. Pedro
alone carries my Winchester, in case of
emergency, or on the chance of big
game, and with the hounds in leash,
we head for the mesa near Klias creek.
We are on the ground now, in the
shelter of the timber, and every eye is
strained for the sight of the game.
Dolores points quickly toward a mov-
ing object in the edge of the woods,
two hundred yards away, and you ut-
ter an exclamation of astonishment,
for, there, with an undulated sweep
like a wave on the sea beach, you see a
line of glossy plumage surge out on
the open stretch. Ten. iiftcen. twenty
minutes pass, and still they come. Then
the last straggler has entered the
chaparral, and we uncoil our lariats.
sit deep in vour saddle now and ride
as you never rode before! The air in
front of you is black with rushing
forms, but their flight w ill be short,
and there is open ground ahead. The
thorny chaparral tears at your legs,
and you know now why the senoritas
ride astride and eschew riding habits.
Mark them in the van, with lassos
playing a rataplan on their horses'
flanks, and their hair streaming in the
wind. Now w e,have reached the open
ground, and already we see the lead-
ers drop to the ground and break into
a run. The hounds are closing up rap-
idly, and in a moment will be upon
them A frantic gobble of terror, and
the hindmost springs into the air. hut
his fat body has been over-nurtured by
the abundance of mast, and the take-
off is slow. A streak of tan-colored
hair springs up after him. and in an-
other second we hear the champ of the
jaws as lie rolls him over in the
loose soil. Another leap through the
cloud of dust, and the other hound is
fast to a magnificent gobbler, which
js still kicking as we ride up.
'Bravo! Hash! (iood dog! Swift
After them, bovs!" and leaving the "ly-
ing birds for Pedro to pick up, we lly
onward in swift pursuit. Three times
is this repeated, but the flights are get-
ting shorter, and now tiie hounds kill
them on the ground. They scatter
confusedly, aud Dolores sw ings her lar-
iat over her head. Z ip! and there is a
laughing cry of triumph as the flying
noose encircles the head of a big gol>-
bler and doubles him up with a broken
neck. Whiz/.! and my own lariat crosses
Conehita's, as we both pull our birds
up standing, aud rapidly haul them in
hand over hand. A blow 011 the head
from the loaded end of our Cuertas
(whips), and we leave them where they
lie, and coil our ropes aftew. But you
have not been idle. Well throw n, my
friend! lint your loop was a trifle large,
and the outstretched neck is very long
ami thin. The noose catches him
around the body just in front of the
wiugs. and he w ill be loose immediate-
ly. Turn your horse now and gallop
like mad through yonder clump of
grease wood, dragging him through it
where he shall catch and break his
neck in the branches. "Hueno! Ami-
go." and you have roped and killed
your bird in gallant style. Rut see
yonder! For the third time the old
Don is coiling his rope on the run. A
huge tm key leaves the ground in a last
spasmodic flight, but the big black- is
almost on him as he raises Once, twice,
thrice the old man's arm whirls
above his head: then the slender
coil leaves his hand in an unbroken
circle, and, gradually diminishing :is it
goes, falls in an eight-inch ring direct-
ly in front of the turkey, who drives
his neck into it with a thud which is
distinctly audible from where we sit,
watching that superb cast The train-
ed black wheels instantly, aud in a
eloud of dust and glory, with his prize
hounding like a huge rubber ball at
the end of his taut rata, the old va-
quero conies galloping up to us. bow -
ing to his pommel in graceful ac-
knowledgment of the enthusiastic
praise we shower upon him
We literally choke <>tt' the dogs now
and assist Pedro in picking up and
packing our game. We have eighteen
turkeys in the panniers, and only stop
long enough to let you try your hand
again oh one old fellow of ahlerinanic
proportions which we find skulking in
the brush. Amid a running fire of jest
and laughing raillery we run him to a
standstill, and, after a scorc of futile
attempts, in which you successively
catch your hat. your horse's neck-, and
innumerable mes<juite boughs, your
rope settles dow n fairly on his bronze
neck, and he is hauled out amid a mim-
ic thunder of applause -Shooting and
Fishing. _
