Scarce fifteen miles from San Fran-
cisco, 1mlf hidden 111 the foliage of sur-
rounding trees, nestling* behind the fir-
crowned ridges and rocky canyons of
grim Tamalpais. are the few scattered
ranch houses which, with the ubiquit-
ous saloon, constitute the little vil-
lage of Larkspur, says the Snn Fran-
cisco Kxaminer. The road runs along
the bottom of the canyon, almost liid-
dea by the overhanging' redwood tree*,
till it merges into a mere cattle trail.
'ishis wild canyon is known locally as
Baltimore gulch.
For five years at least, as vouched for
by actual observation, an aged human
mole, In the still watches of the night,
has silently burrowed and delved 1n
tlie rich brown earth until the sides of
the canyon are literally honeycombed
with his tunnels and caverns. His
work is carried on always by night,
either by the light of the moon or by
the will-o'-the-wisp-like flicker of a
rusty lantern. These caves mount up
into the hundreds always near the
roots of a tree, some fully fifteen feet
in circumference and ten feet deep.
rl he l>igger holes are carefully fenced
around with long redwood poles,
around which dead ferns and grass are
twisted, and at the bottom is a cross.
Other and smaller holes or caves under
tjic roots of giant redwoods arc nn-
fenced, but tilled in with loose earth
and heaps of dead brush. These, too,
contain the mystic cross. Always the
eross.

A visit to the scene of these mysteri-
ous holes was made by an Kxaminer
correspondent one day recently. It
was a hard trip through the dense
cjiaparral and closely growing trees.
Hundreds of the filletl-iii excavations
were visible, of all shapes and i/.es
and in every position. Near one. on
freshly dug earth, footprints were
visible, by another an old sieve was
found molded with uge and exposure.
Poles, stripped of bark, and unr-scs of
dead brush were seen piled around the
remains of former excavation-

I few days ago his light was seen wan-
dering about the hilt.
The labor and expense consequent to
remove such tons of earth alone and
single-handed, us lie has done, and the
care and prevision with which the
poles are set around the freshly ting
holes, with the cross always in the
bottom, all dot e in the dampness and
darkness « f ni/ht, suggest that there
is some treasure worth hunting for.
About six years ago :: man driven
crazy with cancer 011 the brain wan-
dered into the. mountainous regions
around Tamalpais ami his body was fi-
nally found by campers, who had lost
their way, lying in the roots of a large
redwood tree. He had come from Lodi,
and Coroner Eden maintains he was
poor, but more than one man tells a
story of his wanderings in there with
twenty-live thousand dollars which he
must have buri 'd, or it may yet be ly-
ing in some rotting sack scattered in
careless profusion amid the rankly
growing herbage.
This may then be the secret of the
human gopher's strange work, but the
question still remains unanswered:
Why the cross?

strength #f tho Ncir .
The recent French experiment upon
fifty persons of both sexes, in which a
machine for compression as a test of
strength was used, demonstrated that
the strongest man was able to produce
with his right hand a pressure equival-
ent to eighty-five kilograms, the
weakest forty, the average being
fifty-six. One curious conclusion
arrived at as a result of the experi-
ment was this: The short men were
all very nearly as strong as the tall
ones, the average difference between
groups of the two sizes being only
three kilograms. The force of the
strongest woman of the fifty amounted
to only forty-four kilograms, and that
of the weakest to only sixteen, while
the average was only thirty-three
kilograms.
A strange Plant.
In the island of Reunion is a plant
Known as the wild orange, which pro-
duces a fruit, green at first, afterward
bluish, and verging into purple as it
ripens. This has been tested and
found to make a beverage iu every
way equal to coffee and :it a much
lower price. The product is called
"lnussaenda." and can be used
clone or mixed with pure coffee. It is J
announced that about twenty-four
thousand acres of this plant are now*
being cultivated. It is most likely,
however, that chicory, more than cof-
fee. will suffer from the introduction
of "mussaenda."
