PARKS AND PUMPKINS
To buy or not to hu.v teems to Im> the question which is agitating the
minds of the city commissioners.
Some time ago the taxpayers of the city voted *HUM. bonds to be used to
unrchasc a city park. Only a light vote was polled but the majority was
heavy for the purchase of a park. The general understanding at the tune
was that the money was to be used to buy the fair grounds, consisting or _>
acres and Improvements. The Greer county fair association which owned
the property found that their organization hail served its purpose when the
"free fair" bill became a law and offered their holdings for cents on the
dollar. The bonds have sold, the money is in the bank and the bonds are
drawing interest out of the taxpayers pockets.
Interviews with some of the commissioners reveal the fact that there is.
a difference of opinion among thorn as to whether it is advisable to purchase
this site for 16.000. the Powers Park for 12,500 or a tract along the draw near |
the laundry.
All three propositions have merit. The bonds were voted to buy the fair
grounds. The officers of that association held the bag for years and made a
Pumpkin Show possible. They offer to take f>U cents on the dollar.
The Powers tract is a splendid proposition, wellset to trees and near enough i
to town to make it valuable for circuses, baseball, fairs etc, as well as a |
public park.
The laundry tract is close in and while its Improvement would cost a tidy
sura, it would clean up a few eyesores.
It might not be a bad idea for the commissioners to secure options on
all three tracts, state the price and all conditions fairly to the public and let
them decide by vote as to where the money shall be soent.
