THE S 1 AR OF THE WEST-
By BOB WILLIAMS:
In the year 1896, jn the city of Chlc-

of the democratic party of the great-
I est nation on earth a new star sud-
denly became visable in the political
firmament. Unlike the star of the
East in that it came out of the West,
but similar in purpose in that its ob-
ject was to lead the tolling, suffering
mass of humanity to the shrine of hu-
man liberty and a recognition of the
universal truth that all men are bro-
thers. It was christened by the dem-
( oeratic party as the "Peerless one"
j and commissioned with authority to
I stem the tide of greed and tie hand
of graft that was pressing down upon
the brow of labor a crown of thorns
and crucifying mankind upon a cross
of geld. For sixteen years this ma-
jestic body has moved on its orbit,
occassionally dimmed by the meteoric
flash of a dying rival; for. sixteen
years its patent influence has scin-l
tillated throughout the lenght and'
, breadth of our common land, giving
hope and courage to the unfortunate
victims of predatory pirates; for six-
, teen years it has "endured the slings
( and arrows of outrageous fortune, the
contumely of its enemies," and yet
remained true, as true as the star of
the north which "has no fellqw in the
firmament." But, no incident iji ,jts
career, and we do not except its.«niar-
velous advent has so distinguished it
as the guide and talisman of the Com-
mon peCple as that which' octirred on
the 28th day of Juno on the? banks of
the Chesapeake.
