MISTAKES HASH' PRINCIPLES.
One of the greatest errors made is
the ennunciatlog of certalu principles
by men who claim to he the teachers
of the people that are basically wrong.
Dr. furlong in an article in the Repre-
sentative reports the statement of the
inUtaken logic that labor saving ma-
chinery was the chief enemy of the
laboring man, and of the present un-
settled condition of the country. The
history of civilization teaches no such
thing. Time was when mans skill
was to procure food was not suflleent
so it look his whole time to supply his
physical « ants. This is the condition
of all savage races. It is the distance
from this condition to one in which
the greatest amount of time can bo
taken away from the purely food pro-
ducing labor that the highest and
most cultured civilization is reached
It is the ability to devote a larger
amount of time to the pleasure and
cultivation of the senses that marks
the civilized fri in the savage man.
Tliut this shall be still more true; that
the laborers of this country Bhall have
leasure to devote to oth

not be the subordinate officers of the

himself. He will have to take the
consequences. He has split his party

There are many theories extant how
to better the commercial prosperity of
this country and relieve the masses
from the low eb of living they are
threater ed with. Many partial solu-
tions are given, but none seem sutli-
eent The truth of the matter is that
the dream of prosperity cannot be ap-
plied to the whole world. The popu-
lation of the world would undoubtedly
live in a certain condition reached by
the accumulated arts of the ages, if
the results of the world's labor wore
divided equally, but that is all. The
degree and manner of living would be
a ratio of its whole intelligence and
conservated labor product capacity,
resulting from the experience of past
history. Hut any past growth in
wealth of uny nation is undoubtedly
due to the fact that that nation has
something of value to the balance of
the world that it is willing to pay the
price of in its kind of labor, or results
of labor. Commercial prosperity to a
large measure, that above the normal
increase of ability to extend the neces-
sities of life to suit the increased
physical and ethical demands of the
race, is artificial. When the prosperity
of one country increases that of an-
other or the even unpereeptiblc rat
of all others decreases. It is a shifting
process. Yesterday one nation and
one race of people had it, today an-
other. Yesterday one continent held
the highest civilization, today another.
Once it was Africa, then Asia, then
Europe und now America. Commerce
is reciprocal. The higher demands
of one civilization may demand and
absorb the products of a lesser and so
awaken it from a lethergy and in-
activity into a new life and growth of
new demands of things called wealth.
Again a new and higher livilization
may outstrip an older one in the com-
petition in the worlds markets of the
same productions anel the older and
less skilled civilization suffers while
the new is said to prosper wonderfully
as it draws all the world's money and
all the world's labor and effort to its
ary 1, says the tlalveston Tribune, has
accepted the position of secretary of
the Houston business league and will
assume his ne*w duties with the new
year.
At a meeting of the deep water util-
ization committee this morning an
offer was made to Mr. Richardson to
remain in his present position, but he
had alreaoy accepted the Houston
proposition. The work of the deep
water utilization to continue uninter-
rupted during the next year, the planB
for which will be determined at a
meeting to be held at the Chamber of
commerce rooms next Tuesday night.

actually pronounced incurable by the
medical faculty of the college he w as

turned homeward and he remembered
the household remedy of his parents.
He knew very well if his mother
could iwtvise him she would say at
once. "Take Pe-ru-na." He was not
able to .wake the long sand tedious
journey home and it took a long time
for a letter to cross she1 ocean. So he
commenced taking l'e-ru-na according
to instructions on the bottle. It help-

when this port secured 18 feet of

have done it. Upon the organization
of the utilization committee, with Mr.

local spirits, Mr. Richardson-was made

by the committee and the secretary
has been confessedly the most fruitful
effort ever made in behalf of Galves-

The Tribune has been in a position
to carefully and minutely observe the
work of this organization anel has so
repeatedly expressed its admiration
for the methods and gratification at
results that further commendation
would seem like flattery.
