The Democratic Meeting.
On Wednesday the democrats
from all over the county, about
200 in number met at Alva in a
mass convention to talk over
the situation
Extensive preparations had
been made by the citizens of
Alva for this occasion. The
trains were met by bands and
reception committees. In the
afternoon a meeting was held
in the conrt room and consider-
able enthusiasm was manifested
among the old timers present.
At 0:30 the central committee
went into executive session and
as the editor of the News is not
a member of that body we can
only give the deliberations of
the committee as we got it from
some of those who were present
Resolutions were passsed
adopting all the populist plat
forms of the past and some
of the socialist platforms
was added. It was decid-
ed by a vote of 34 to 10 to hold
primary election for nomination
of the ticket this year. Chair
man McLaughlin appointed the
following campaign committee
to manage the coming campaign
A. McTaggart.of Carmen: Fred
Finger, of Clymer; J. B. Doolin
of Alva; Geo. Wood, of Chero-
kee and C. J. Wall of the south
side. The committee then ad-
journed subject to the call of
the chairman.
The banquet was an elabor
ate affa?r and Alva paid^he
bills. Toastmaster Duun Opt
all in good humor from start
tp finish. Judge Gore and
Claud McCrory were the fa-
vorites, both being cheered to
the echo while tne glee club
with some very laughable par
odies added spice to the occa-
sion.
From present indications
the republicans that met here
some few weeks since will real-
ize they have been to a "hoss
race before the November
election rolls around.

H. B. Frazier was found dead
in the header barge at his home
near Stockholm last Friday
evening by Bob Scarbrough who
had gone to Englewood for Mrs.
Frazier. They came back as
far as John Frazier's and Bob
went down to tell Grandpa of
the arrival of his wife with the
above result.—May Monitor.
The appointment of A. J.
Ross to the land office at Alva
did the editor of the News as
much good as any one thing
Kosevelt has done since he was
president. One reason is that
Jack Ross is ? friend and tin.
other is that Mussellor is a
carpetbagger and a meddler.
—Misses Alta"and Edna Mill-
er of the "Miller Ranch" near
Fairview spent Saturday and
Sunday in Carmen the guest of
Miss Bessie Blackburn.

—Will Musgraves, who is at-
tending Business College at
Wichita sends the necessary
coin for the News, it is better
than a letter as it has news in
it about everybody.
— Smith Schuman, who lives
southeast of Carmen in the
fruit belt was a caller Saturday
and pushed his subscription
ahead. He says that it is his
opinion that the recent cold
weather has not injured the
fruit.
—Mrs. Blackburn has return-
ed from the Eastern Market
where she has been engaged
for the past ten days selecting
spring millinery and is now
ready to show the latest and
most up to date line on display
in this part of the territory.
— Chas. F. Deem, editor of

day morning on a vacation. He
will visit friends and relatives
in Woods county for ten days
or two weeks, in the meantime

—J. W. Wallace, of near
Augusta postofflce was a caller
last week and pushed his sub
acription ahead and informed us
that he was going to spend the
spring with Kansas people and
as soon as he learns of his new
location he would write. It is
just another case of an Okla
homa farmer taking a summer
vacation. Mr. Wallace is en
tilled to all the pleasure he can
get as he is a hard working
farmer and suffered the priva-
tions of the early days.
