SLEEPING PORCHES IN
SUMMER
When the comparative ea-e and
small expense with which sleeping
porches can be constructed is consid
ered it is surprising that so many
persons in this state fail to take ad
vantage of them There is scarcely
anything which can be done with so
little trouble that brings such large
returns in the way of health and com-
fort This of coufte is especially true
in summer although as a matter Of
fact it is a good thing for a normally
strong and healthy person to sleep
out of doors all the year around Too
much fresh air has never harmed
anyone
Sleeping porches are more common
in the cities than in tlie country yet
there are a large proportion of farm
bouses where the members of the fam-
ily could sleep in the open with al
most no cost or trouble Many hous-
es In the country have already tlie
necessary porches often on tlie upper
story Such a porch can be enclosed
with netting but this is not abso
lutely necessary A few tacks and a
few yards of cloth or canvas to screen
the bed from view are ail that are
needed during the greater part of tlie
summer During the hot dry weath
Cr mosquitoes and other insects are
not Ukely to bother the sleeper And
any one who has slept outdoors dur-
ing the hot weather will never volun-
tarily return to indoors sleeping It
la the difference between sleeping
comfortably and tossing restlessly in
a room that has become thoroughly
heated during the day and which docs
not cool off at night
SELECTING SEED CORN
While at Chicksshs County Agent
Cooper showed me a hesd-to-row plat
of corn which was planted from ears
which were selected in a crib
Among tlie rows one row showed
strong plants with good eats growing
at the proper height for convenience
in huskirg This was the only row
in one hundred which showed all
these desirable characters Tlie row
which was planted from the "best
ear” was not so good as others which
were 'planted from common-looking
ears
I’lats which are planted from ears
selected in the field where there is s
chance to nee the kind of plant upon
which the ears grew show a large
per cent of rows carrying the desired
qualities' ' But selection of seed'
wi tli-out seeing tlie plants upon whiew
it grew proves disappointing
